When ever I get a new knife I want the first cut to be worth while. Ill carry a knife in my pocket for days until I find a worthy cut. Usually I end up cutting the end off of my cigar, opening a box with a different new knife in it. And if its summer time, Ill wait to cut a steak. Today was the first cut for my ZT 0550BLK, I used it to remove the tags from my Sig M400. Its kind of silly but it makes the knife mine and I like starting its life off on the right foot.

Ive been wondering what you guys do when you get a new knife? And if you feel like explaining, why?

Leaves.
I roll up a couple of live leaves until they're about an inch or so thick, and then I cut through them. Then I double them, and cut again. I do this over and over until I can't cut them anymore.

For whatever reason, every new knife I get I grill some venison steaks and make that my first ever cut. Hahahahah odd maybe, delicious yes.

Usually try to pop some hairs on my arm, or test the edge on my thumbnail.

I really don't have any ritual for this. It's usually just the box or some paper within reach. That reminds me.....I have a kuba sitting around....

Arm hair to check the sharpness. If not up to standards then it hits the stones unless I'm not sure if it is a keeper or not.

I always test the edge, on my arm or paper first thing when getting a new one
