Noob question - what's the hole for in the middle of the scale for? It matches up with the hole at the end of the lockbar cut, but why is it on the presentation side?

TIA

Doesn't have to be a gemstone either...

Thanks, if you check out my thread on it I have some pics of it completely disassembled when I reblasted the slabs after making all the Mokume fittings.

I found the "meet your maker" videos on youtube, and saw the bit about how the holes are use for fixturing the scales during manufacturing. My background is mechanical engineering an machining, and I have to say it is a pretty simple solution that makes machining a snap, but it does seem kinda odd to have a leftover hole right in the middle of the part. Certainly NOT second guessing Mr. Reeve's approach and I got the impression from the videos that he is an absolute stickler for the details of every aspect of his knives' construction. If he wanted a hole leftover, I'm sure he had a dozen reasons as to why it was the very best thing to do.

The tooling hole has been removed from some of the newer offerings such as the Inkosi.
