Along the same lines as the seax. What is the usefulness of the kerambit? Other than as a fighting knife.

The Kerambit was originally used to cut rice stalks, herbs and other small plants that are low to the ground.

i've never handled another kerambit that much other than my HI khukrambit, but i feel that the HI version would excel in several other areas other than goring bad guys. The beauty of the design is the finger choil, IMHO. You can really choke up on the knife to get good control when using it to carve/whittle. The finger ring acts as a counterweight to really lock the knife in your hand. I don't think i would want to chop with it other than maybe to limb less than 1" material. It has a nice stout blade that you could baton through a log in a pinch. In short, the HI kerambit is a neat little knife to pack around when you need a good utility knife AND could be assulted;) The ring could be used for more than just blade retention. I see it as a place to fasten a rope if a rope needed to be thown over a branch or something.

Ouch! The thought of a razor sharp piece of steel swinging back at me like a pendulum is not pleasant!

i agree totally. I would put my thinking cap on for a few extra minutes before i used it as weight, but if the NEED came about at least it would work. That, or you could tie the rope to it and swing it around your head to take out attacking ninjas Chuck Norris style...sorry DIJ:)

Chuck wears cowboy boots.
Everybody knows you cant swing a kerambit when you're wearing cowboy boots.
It's a rule.

The kerambit just feels good. Pick it up and you wont want to put it down.

well said, both Danny and Jake....;)

Anything that comes out of Birghorka nowadays seems to err on the tool side...even the MA pieces are usually sturdy enough for brush clearing, etc. The same with the Kerambit piece.

It is very carry-able.....just had mine out again last night. Fun to use and I will have it on my belt this weekend camping. I'll give a full report next week. Gonna take the YCS too...

I'm interested in how the kerambit worked out. I keep staring at them when they are the deal of teh day, but have resisted so far.

Shann I think you'd like the kerambit. it's a pretty cool blade. Danny is a ninja and loves his (really, how much more of an endorsement do you need). I like mine because it's beefy and really gives you that piece o' mind when it's tucked away in your coat pocket. It's a "I mean business" kind of knife;)
However, it's also a pretty useful utility blade. stout enough to pry with if need be. Granted, i don't think it will become your new camp knife. IMHO opinion there are several HI products i'd take with me camping before my bit. In short, it's a cool blade if you are a ninja. It's a cool blade if you're shlub like me:) I wouldn't give mine up for anything. I grip it and I feel its power instantly.
hold out as long as you can;)

I guess the HI Kerambit design is less creepy than the traditional one. It's design gives the touch of utilitarian side of it. It's blade is wider and it's tip is less pointy. Still I believe that HI Kerambit could function just well enought compared to the traditional one.

I think a cop who stopped you might agree that it's an "I mean business" sort of thing to have in your pocket.

I have one from Valiant, it's a big, double-edged slashing machine. Very well made, but pure weapon. Not something you could easily explain away. I love the HI kerambit, I hope to grab one after the holidays and see what practical applications I can put it to. One could probably field dress a deer with it.

Here in Kentucky it would be legal according to my understanding with a CCW.

I agree with you on that one, Thomas, but i don't carry mine in any area where I would not rather answer a few questions to some cops than be carted off to the hospital or worse. I'm not one of those guys that carries a big blade to carry a big blade. 99% of the time I carry a SAK and/or Leatherman and that's it...sometimes a JKM to work to play with;) But when i have to go downtown or venture through a bad part of town at night, then I'd rather not take my chances. My gal and I like to go to some of the nicer places to eat downtown, but downtown here is kinda like New Orleans' French Quarter. It goes from well lit night spot to real scary real fast.
Parking there is horrible. You have to park across hell's half-acre and walk for a few blocks. I'm not the kind of guy that looks for trouble, but if someone just down the block sees us get out of her Audi with her dressed up nice and me in my nice leather dinner jacket that hides my fittness and dorky Clark Kent glasses I wear, then he might get the idea that he found an easy target. In any event of a confrontation with someone that is desperate I will gladly hand over my wallet and get the hell out of there...especially if my lady is in any danger. BUT, if i get cornered in a bad situation, i want that 'bit to be at hand;) Like i said, it speaks volumns and can back up that talk with action.
Besides, indiana has no real knife law. That and I don't look like someone the cops would want to frisk;)
That all said, i do understand that the kerambit is not something that anyone can pack anywhere. It is a 9" 10oz knife for sure:)
