Assuming walking/hiking all day long, and carrying
other gear?
Any experiences would be appreciated.

That depends on how heavy the sword is, how tall you ar, and the method of carry.

Hi Scot,
Your question is a bit vague, but I can tell you that wearing a rapier on a baldric all day long gets a bit tiresome. :D

In all seriousness though, it does depend greatly on your method of carry.

Sword canes (illegal almost everywhere) are easy to carry, but most examples found today are fairly short. (20 to 21 inches)

Carrying a wakizashi mounted on the frame of your backpack is painless, convenient, and very quickly accessed.

What did you have in mind?

A more detailed question gets a more detailed answer!

my friend has a lolo (grandfather) balisong that's 20 inches closed and nearly 40 inches open. the blade's like that of a rapier. it's too big to flip, probably too fragile and will snap when you hit the pivot portion with a heavy, blunt object. but it's ok for a rapier-type thrust. imagine the look on your opponent's face when you suddenly unfold a 40 inch sword against his "usual-length" knife.

:D

When I was young and stupid I would comfortably carry a big bolo tucked into the waist of my pants with my shirt covering the handle. Classic Filipino carry. Generally though in heavy vegitation, tight quarters a smaller sword like a barong is very practical. Easily unsheathed, and used in tight quarters. Really territory makes a huge difference. Realistically you could walk around with as big a sword as you want strapped in some manner to your person (even the heaviest wallhanger wouldnt weigh all that much compared to other things), but depending on territory it would be useless if you cant easily un-sheath it and then have the room to use it.

... sort of a TSHHTF situation and one is
hiking/walking miles at a time with backpack
for food/bedding/water, a rifle in your hand, and
a pistol and knife on your belt, and a sword?
It just seems like everytime I think about it,
its really seems like taking a sword is just
a waste of time and energy. Particularly a
long one. Was curious if anyone has found an
easy way to carry one, and what size blade did
they carry? 15" 18" 20" 24"? At some point the
extra length has got to make carrying a sword on
an extended hike w/gear more hassle than its worth.
Perhaps just up-grading your knife to a "Bowie"
is a more realistic and useful goal in such situations.
I've spent hours cutting brush with axe and machete,
but never took anything larger than hatchet and 6"
knife on overnite or extended hike.

I have a nice Del Tin hand and a half sword that I had a back scabbard built for. If I had a reason or desire to, I could carry it that way all day.

suggest you guys talk to christopher lambert, adrian paul and all the other immortals. they seem able to hide 40 inch-plus swords comfortably underneath their leather jackets and trench coats and what-have-you.

;)
