Hi All,

New to the forum so I figured i'd start with a list of what I currently own and like and see what sort of suggestions you would suggest for the next purchase.

I'll try to list them from largest to smallest - of coarse I might be off a little.

Becker BK7 with micarta handles - camping
Cold Steel Bushman - used before the BK7 came along
Esee4 - have this attached to my maxpedition proteus, which i bring into the bush for day trips, hunting etc
Mora 2000 - great little knife used to make feather sti usually bring along with my bk7
Cold Steel Recon 1 Clip point - also in the proteus, bought because of the lock and as a backup incase the esee goes missing
Spyderco Manix 2 - wanted to try the ball lock and it felt good in hand
Spyderco Tenacious all balck FFG - who doesn't have one of these lol
Kershaw Oso Sweet - wanted to try a assisted opening
Delica 4 ZDP-189 FFG green - love this knife and is my favorite EDC
CRKT minimalist - in the proteus so have around for skinning smaller animals, etc
Spyderco hawkbill lady bug H1 - keychain knife, love this litle thing

As you can see I tend to lean towards Spyderco for my smaller knives, edc'ing. Predominately use spydercos for my daily uses and really enjoy using them. I love the idea of having a rust proof knive such as the H1. Since having the hawkbill lady bug i've been considering a larger hawkbill to buy. The delica 4 fits me the best and i just plain love the feel of this knife. Why i was considering a tasman if I go hawkbill or salt 1, nearest to the same size as D4. I'm just not sure if the hawkbill style blade would fit the bill. One gap I can see in my current line up would be a rust proof knife I could bring along with me camping, fishing, outdoor winter activities, etc. Something I don't need to worry about cleaning right away. Once the knife is picked I then need to decide to go SE or PE.

Can you tell i'm not exactly sure which direction to go? Please let me know if you see any other gaps in my current lineup that I could fill beside what I have mentioned.

Appreciate all the help!

I agree that a Salt would be a nice addition to the collection. It gives you a knife that does not rust so you can take it with you for those wet activities or into the ocean. Tasman and Salt 1 are good choices, I would go with a nice Serrated edge Salt, either the Atlantic or the Tasman.

Didn't even consider the Atlantic, totally slipped my mind. I think I will be going with SE no matter which knife I pick if it is in H1.

Just deciding which profile would be better, decisions never end!

Thanks for the reply

From what I researched the caly 3.5 would be similar in size to the manix 2 and atlantic would be an endura. I remember trying an endura out and it just didn't feel as good as my delica. I think i might just buy a few knives to end the debate.

Caly 3 to add in the regular EDC rotation
Tasman SE - cacmping/fishing knife - plus I think I just need a larger hawkbill then the ladybug i currently have
Salt 1 - more uses then tasman but is still rust proof.

Suggestions if I should go SE/PE on salt??

Definitely serrated on the salt. H1 really shines with a serrated edge.

Also, just to throw another kink in the chain, the southard flipper is now available from the spyderco factory outlet and I would imagine it will hit retailers shelves soon. It'll be spydercos first flipper, feature a ball bearing pivot system, titanium frame lock, and the spectacular cts-204p blade steel which is carpenter's version of m390 which features outstanding edge retention without being overly difficult to sharpen as well as great corrosion resistance. In my opinion its an absolute must buy from spyderco.

Did some more thinking and really sat down to figure out what sort of use this knife would get.

I think the perfect one would be the SE Salt 1 for me. Similar to size as the delica, rust resistant, serrated edge will still be good for cutting rope, paracord, even food when camping. The little big of "plain edge" at the tip will still allow me to do any finer work that the serrations wouldn't allow. Example would be when fishing and i cut a lure off. Sometimes there will be a little bit of line left on the hook, due to the knots i use maybe?, but anyways i like to put the luge on a flat surface and push a flat blade through the line that is right up against the loop of the lure to remore the ecess vs attempting to hold the lure and remaining line and pulling a knife through. Less chance of cutting myself as well this is etremely hard to do with any gloves on while ice fishing. Might be a minor detail but Salt 1 for now and see if I need another later.

As far as gentlemans knifes I really like the look of the caly 3 or 3.5 in CF, just trying to justify the price tag. I could get the salt 1 and tasman for less then the one caly and so far my hawkbill lady bug has been able to handle my usual edc tasks with no issue. Minus the tip bending after slicking though a small piece of material that was laying on my bench.....

Thanks for the help and let me know if you have any more suggestions

Forgot to mention that I do work in a office setting, business casual so a gentlemans knife would be nice but i've heard the laminated zdp-189 scratches easily and the laminated lines can be wavey (luck of the draw) I think this would ruin the look of the knife for its intended use, you want a knife that will stay good looking while carrying with a suit. I have a full zdp-189 blade and love how sharp it can get i'm just a little leary.
