i have been reading different descriptions of the sheath that comes with the patrol machete. some say that it is only a propex nylon sheath while some say that this nylon sheath is lined with plastic or kydex. can someone clarify what exactly the constructionand materials of the PM sheath is. thanks.

Welcome to the forums! The PM sheath is Propex nylon, but it has some sort of liner (not Kydex) on the inside that gives the sheath rigidity. Maybe Will can jump in here and give specifics. Of all the production machetes out there, the PM (aside from being the best production machete...) comes with the best made sheath. I loathe those fabric sheaths that are all floppy and looks like you can split the thing in half just by inserting the blade back in

OK Will...your turn :D

i read somewhere in the forums, in a post by ron hood if im not mistaken, that the sheath's plastic liner deforms when left out under the sun. is this a common occurence or an unusual one. has it been addressed?

Toby - I talked with Will again this afternoon and he has asked me to respond with this information regarding the PM sheaths. There is no liner at all inside the sheaths. The Propex nylon material actually has a clear plastic laminate that gives the material its rigidity. If Kydex liners were used, that would only drive up the cost of the PM, as a lot of Kydex would have to be used. Will did bring up the fact that Ron Hood's sheath did deform when left in the sun. It's just a result of this particular material when it is subject to heat such as the summer sun. Pretty much the only way to get around this if you plan on doing a lot of work outdoors with the PM is to have a Kydex carry rig made for it. Bob Bailey of Elite Tactical Carry Systems makes a really nice Kydex rig for the PM: http://www.darrelralph.com/ddr/bobt/beck4.jpg.html . I have one of these rigs and while the Propex nylon sheath is nice, the Kydex one is - as the young 'uns say these days - "da bomb" :)Hope this helps.

that did help, thanks. i do have a few questions i'd like cleared regarding the sheath from ETCS/bob bailey for the patrol machete:

1. i noticed from the picture from your website that there is a screw on panel on the back of the sheath to which a webbing strap with metal clips is attached.
is this removable to permit having no such attachments at all?
can it be transfered to the other side for ambidextrous carry or attachment?
how large diameter are the holes on the border of the sheath?

2. are the sheaths available off the shelf or do i have to send in my knife for fitting?
how long do they take to get sent and what are the payment methods?

i emailed elite tactical a couple of times but no reply. since you already own one i thought you might be able to help. anyone else who does can pitch in. thanks.

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, the Kydex panel that the webbing is attached to is fastened to the sheath with 4 Phillips head screws. The panel can be removed. Though I have not tried, it does appear that you can set it up for left handed withdraw by relocating the panel to the opposite side. The rivets on the perimeter of the sheath are 0.215" in diameter.

2) Bob has a PM so you do not need to send your knife to him. It is my understanding that he only makes these sheaths when he gets an order(s) for them. Not sure what his delivery time is now, its best that you ask him. As far as payment methods go I paid by check, and you can probably use a money order. He isn't set up to take PayPal or credit cards.

One other method you might want to try is to email any questions for Bob to knifemaker Darrel Ralph. Bob is his stepson and Bob works out of the same shop Darrel does. Darrel can be emailed at dr@darrelralph.com.

This PM Kydex sheath is really worth the money. I hate hassling with the webbing button snap everytime I put the thing back in the sheath. Since the Kydex rig locks up around the guard of the handle, it really holds it in securely yet releases easily with a gentle tug.
