I've been told a company called MCS has some kind of black coating that's baked onto blades. Does anyone have their phone number? Is anyone familiar with their product and how it's applied? Is it a decent coating worth looking into?
Thanks.

I believe you are talking about MSC. The phone number for ordering is:
800-645-7270

You may also want to try Brownell's. Their number is:
(515) 623-4000

Be sure to look at C.L. Wilkins supplier list on this forum. He has worked very hard to compile a list of suppliers of various things used by knifemakers.

As far as the stuff goes, I have used it once to highlight the etch on some cable damascus (or wire rope damask depending on who you are talking to). I probably won't do that again. When I went to "dust" the high spots, I found it was tough to get off. As my kids would say, "Well Duh, it's a baked on lacquer dad -- it's supposed to be tough."

I believe you are looking for the Molly-Teflon from Brownells. They offer another bake-on as well but get the Molly stuff as even if it wears off in high friction areas it leaves the corrosion resistance in the metal due to having been baked and let into the pores. Its about $25 a can.
My suggestion is to buy the non-aersol jar, mix it yourself, and spray it from a decent airbrush to avoid the "clotting" that can happen with the "ready-to-go" spray cans.
I'm using it on the first METAL knives that I'm going to be putting up on my Nonmetalic Knives site later today if you are looking for any pics of the stuff on a knife. Its pretty tough stuff and worth trying.

Thank-you. I have an old Brownells catalog I've never looked at. I thought it was just gun repair supplies. Now that I look at it I see all kinds of stuff I now can't live without.

Bill: I'm into guns also so I use them quite a bit but they also have a lot that applies to knifemaking as well. I'm really happy about the way the Molly coat came out on my knives..been carrying the same one to test that and the new coating Im putting on the sheaths and handles...and both have held up real well..I think you will be pleased.....

The coating you are referring to is known as Tool Black and is carried by MSC as you thought. The current issue of Blade magazine has an article on blade coatings of all kinds and also talks about this particular one. It appears to be coating that can be applied relatively easily much like blueing solutions.-Guy T.

P.S. C.L. Wilkins with the help of the forumites has compiled an excellent list of suppliers. Its near the top of the posts.

Oops, I just noticed you specifically asked about a baked on coating, I don't know if Tool Black is the item you are looking for.
Goes to show you, we need to comprehend what we read before we act!-Guy T.
