Whats the point?

Really, whats the point of a Sebenza, or equally expensive knives? Is it supposed to be a statement? Or is it just the 'cool' thing amongst knife nuts? I own plenty of ZT, and kershaw blades, and they work perfect for everything Ive ever used them for.

At what point is a 500 dollar knife 'worth it'? Or is it just another way for people to try and let everyone know their 'class'?

Well i have a little over 50 knives going from £2.50 to my helle at £90 pound sorry i don't know what that is in dollers . But ther is a lot of fab knives out ther that i like that just happen to be expensive but would still love to have them .

It's all relative.
What's the point of a Mercedes when a Ford can get you from point A to point B just as well.
What's the point of a Rolex when a simple quartz watch is far more accurate?
What's the point of lobster when chicken soup from a can will fill you up?

Craftsmanship, fit and finish, appearance etc. are "worth" more to some than others.

A good knife is a good knife. Price is secondary.

What's the point of ANY luxury good? What can a Patek Philippe do that a $25 Casio cannot? They both tell time. A Honda Civic you bought used for $8,000 will get you to the grocery store just as well as an AMG S65 will.

The comment of "is it just another way for people to try and let everyone know their class" comes off as envy, sorry. Secondarily, I can guarantee you that the 99% of the folks who even know what a Sebenza (or a Strider, or any custom made folder) is...are on this forum right now. The chances of you ever whipping out a Sebenza to cut a thread with it only to hear indrawn breath and "!!! A SEBENZA!!! WOW!" from coworkers or strangers in a public place are slim to none. And yet, people buy them anyway? Why do you think that is? One might posit the theory that, just like every other luxury good out there, people are willing to pay a premium for a high quality luxury item. And I would also guess that most members on this board who bought a Sebenza surely didn't buy them to try to impress others.

So, to answer your question, the point that a $500 knife is worth it is when someone has $500, and they want a Sebenza or other high priced luxury item. Pretty simple.

I think the point is simply if the knife you want costs that much, then you have to pay that to get it.
Really, most times it isn't any deeper than that.

It won't impress most people...in fact, most people will think you are insane or stupid for spending that much on a knife.

I keep telling my fiancé ALL of these things!!
It's all a matter of R+D, materials and craftsmanship.
If an inexpensive folder (relatively) gets the job done for you and makes you happy, rock on!

The same question could be asked about your ZT's, the same type of knife could be had for a fraction of the price. Why do buy the ZT over a Rat 1?

Value is a personal decision. I personally don't own a ZT knife (yet) but I am working up to it. Don't own a Sebenza either. Not really trying to work up to that. I probably wouldn't carry it anyway. But I have given very serious thought to buying a nice Fallkniven folder or Dozier custom folder. It is all about personal preference. Nothing more.

Yeah, when I carry my Sebenza women through themselves at me because of my obvious wealth.

Seriously though, imo the Sebenza is just a better knife than a Benchmade, Spyderco, etc. My favorite Spyderco is the Caly 3.5, and as much as I love the design, it is nowhere near as refined as a Sebenza. You have to play with the pivot to get rid of the side-to-side play, I still get a little if I want a smooth opening, and there is up and down slop in the lock. With my small Sebenza Insingo, I can take the whole knife apart using three identical screws and the supplied Allen key. Putting it back together is idiot proof as well; just snug up three screws; no adjusting for smoothness, its perfect the first time and every time. If you can find value in that then you might appreciate the subtle differences that make a Sebenza great, if not then enjoy the less expensive brands. (I still do)

The "point"is, to get a knife you really like and enjoy it. No matter the cost.

I would like one , but would be too worried about losing it. I could handle losing a $50-100 knife , but not a $500+ one. I've had clipped folders pop out of my pocket too many times to warrant the risk. The Sebenza itself is a beautiful knife though for sure.

I've been pretty happy with what I have under the $100 mark performance-wise , and live with that.

What's the point in having a wife that looks like any number of Hollywood hotties, when an ugly girl will do just fine, and cheaper in the long run. If you wanna' be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife, so from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you; same goes for knives, get a beastly el cheapo and it will perform just because it's grateful you bought it. Insofar as wives go, mine is uglier than sin, but dang, she sho' can cook.:D

This pretty much sums it up for me.

What's the point in owning multiple knives that fill the same roll, or flashlights or guns or anything else. What's the point of having a 50" flat screen when a 13" tube tv shows pictures?

Did he ask where the point is or WHAT the point is. You guys are acting like it's the greatest interwebz picture ever.

BTW, many people who buy Philippe Pateks are in it for the status symbol and can care less about what is inside. Bad example and it only enhances what the OP is saying. Example, if you are a car enthusiast then the Mercedes is worthit for the quality etc. bt lets be real, many buy it for status. Im just saying that these arent the best examples but I do agree that buying a Sebenza for status is ill advised when 99% of the population will laugh at you for spending morethan $50 for a pocket knife.

+1 couldn't have said it better myself

That is another horrible example. There is a big difference between a big screen and a laundromat TV. The law of diminishing returns cannot be applied in this case when you get so much more with the bigger screen. But with knives, a Mora or an Opinel in some respects can run circles around much more expensive knives.

People just want the best or what as perceived as the best. The tighter tolerance of a Sebenza is importan to some people. You get to a point in this HOBBY when you say ok... I have my ZT, great whats next.
