What’s the purpose of the small flange on the outside of the Benchmade 761?

On my knife, the flange prevents the lockbar from adjusting properly with wear. After centering my blade with a little force, the knife developed a little vertical blade play. The blade is now centered, but it rattles when I shake it.

Normally, the lockbar would move to the right to take up the slack. But on the 761, the flange prevents it from adjusting, leaving me with a rattletrap of an expensive, almost new knife.

That's exactly what it's meant to do. It prevents the lockbar from ever developing a late lockup and helps prevent lockstick. As it wears in you're supposed to rotate the octagonal stop pin to a new face. This pushes the blade back into the lockbar taking up the vertical play.

Thank you. It's back to perfect.

I talked to Benchmade about this at SHOT. Give them a call. They have a built in way to adjust the lockup as it wears. They can talk you through it on the phone or you can send it in.
