What's the real story about Schrade's one-piece knives?

Ok guys I'm confused. I searched this forum and read thru topics about possible fake CR knives and found that there are some models legally made by other manufactures. This leads me to believe that CR is or was open to working with other manufacturers to produce lower cost versions of his knives.

Currently I'm looking for information about the one-piece knives made by Schrade. Are they copies made without CR's consent or did CR make a deal with them?

All the past topics that I read about these specific knives do not have any facts but are full of opinions.

I mean no disrespect if CR Knives is working with other manufacturers. I actually think it's probably a good business move expecially in this economy. Their designs have become famous but they are still priced out of reach of a lot of Americans. Lower priced versions of their designes would sell like hot-cakes. I ordered a clone of their Mark VI and can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'm hoping someone who works for Chris Reeve knives can comment.

Thanks,

Here's my take:

CRK has nothing to do with the Schrades, aside from being the origin of the designs.

The Schrades are clearly fairly close copies of certain models in the CRK one-piece line. CRK no longer makes the one-piece line, however, so Schrade isn't really competing with CRK. I think I recall something along the lines that CRK is aware, but doesn't really care at this point. I don't believe there are any intellectual property rights at issue, such as patents or trademarks. The Schrades are clearly marked as Schrades, and are not an attempt at a counterfeit.

As a rough parallel, consider that Blackjack and others make copies of Randall designs which have been around for many decades, and which Randall still makes. And Randall isn't hurting for orders (5+ year wait, I think?).

CRK explored the possibility of collaborating with CRKT years ago. The collaboration failed, but someone at CRKT snitched a few knives and sold them. As knives, they are not worth much, but some collectors like them.

Recently, CRK and Bill Harsey helped out on the Razionale, made by Fantoni Knives of Italy.

Thanks,

Sorry to say but that is a poor show IMO.

There was more than a few of those CRKT Sebenzas let out. I see them for sale in a particular shop here to this day......again a poor show.

These are copies of my designs but changes were made to make them not exactly the same. They are made by Taylor Brands. They were produced without my permission while we were still making our one piece knives. We have never authorized anyone else to make the hollow handle one piece knives.

In light of Chris Reeve's position, I retract my above ill-informed comments.

I own one of the CRKT Sebenzas. As Esav noted, as a knife, it really isn't worth much. But as a collector's item, it is.... interesting! I do not plan on ever using or selling the thing, but I do like having it in my collection as a curiosity.

If you talk about 1-piece knives than as far as I know they did a co-lab with two companies:
- Microtech -> Nemesis dagger blade with 1-piece handle in A2, price is sky-high now, just couple of pieces
- Al-Mar -> various models, limited editions of 250 (?) pcs each, collector's knives now, at least 2x the price of Chris Reeve 1-piece knives I'd say

Al-Mar & Chris Reeve... yeah, good old times...
