Stumbled across TOPS site a few months ago. Have just about decided to add a Moccasin Ranger to my second line gear, and am looking for tactical hawk for line two or line three. Have already replaced a USMC
KABAR with a Cold Steel piece (Randall #1 copy) but don't like the idea of hard rubber (krayton) fingerguards. What is the scoop on TOPS pieces? Also Anyone know if American Tomohawk has a web site? looking for informed opinions only. "Just the facts mam"

I am assuming by your comment on the "rubber guard" that the CS Randall copy that you have is the ODA. They also offer a version of that knife that is much higher end with black micarta handles and a stainless guard. The blade is AUS8 as opposed to the 420HC of the ODA.

Also, for tactical hawks check out

TOPS makes great stuff. Can't wait to get my hands on their Rinaldi Armageddon.

Orion,
Roger that on the ODA. Looked at the CS R1 Military Classic but decided against it for several reasons:
- only comes with a leather sheath ( need something Like Kydex, Securex etc.)
- finish is inappropriate for my needs ( don't suppose stainless can be blued?)
I do like micarta for the handle on the R1 however Randall knives offers more choices in terms of blade and handle materials, styles, etc.
CS also makes hawks in drop forged 5150 medium carbon at a great price but am wondering what the quality is. Thanks for the info on the site.

While every Cold Steel knife I have ever had (about 13) were very sharp and held a good edge, the Vietnam Hawks I bought are dull. The "cutting" edges are about as thick as the back of a typical pocket knife. I guess that is ok if you really like to sharpen them. As far as throwing goes, they throw pretty accurately but after about 10 throws into soft plywood the hawk I was throwing started to come loose. Their other hawks have a different design so would probably not have the same problems with coming loose but they are probably also just as dull.

Ive heard good and bad about them, then I decided to order a knife from them and all I have to say is that they are GREAT! They have the best customer service I ever dealt with, so helpful and polite. The knife, their cockpit commander model, is one of the most well thought out and well made knives Ive ever handled. You cant go wrong with Tops in my opinion.

Once again thanks for the info. You guys have had some great input.
