Well, last night I was polishing some of my fixed blades (just have to touch them now again, you know) and I came across some notes I'd made on sharpness out of the box (no, I'm not anal). After some further evaluation using arm hair shaving and printer paper push cutting for test mediums, I came up with the following list of fixed blade sharpness in order of sharpest to dullest. Yes, the this test was mostly subjective, and I don't have any hair left on my arms, but I found it interesting anyway.

1. Dozier Master Skinner - D2
2. Tie - Dozier Professional Guide - D2
and Blackjack Trail Guide - A2
3. Cold Steel Kobun Tanto - Carbon 5
4. Tie - SOG Government Model - 440A,
Falkniven S1 - VG-10, Buck Hunter Drop Point
5. Tie - Falkniven A1 - VG-10
and Busse Basic #7 - Modified INFI
6. Tie - A.G. Russell Deer Hunter - ATS-34
Cold Steel Master Hunter - Carbon 5
7. Big Country Kamper - AUS8a
8. Tie - Busse Satin Jack - INFI
and Becker Campion - 0176.
9. Precision Knives Drop Point Hunter - 440C

I did not rate several other fixed blades because I obtained them before I started keeping notes and I've sharpened them many times since the original purchase. However, no knife has been or is as sharp as the Dozier Master Skinner. I did not rate any of my folders. I will save that for a future project. What are the sharpest knives out of the box in your experience?

The sharpest one would be the one most recently sharpened, but the most effecient cutting knife I have experienced so far is my David Boye hunter which has a cast 440C blade known as Boye Dendritic Steel(BDS).

The sharpest knives in my drawer or more likely in my pocket are my Sypderco Caylpso's have both large and small but they are the sharpest out of the box and the easy to keep that way it's got to be the VG-10 steel. If you have not tried this steel you must give it a try!!I think that steel is greatly under rated steel that I wish that more people would try. Wish more knife makers would use it also.

Spyderco Moran drop point is scary sharp. A knife dont need to be much sharper than this.

The sharpest knife I have ever had, just straight out of the box would have to be my cold steel medium clip point voyager. A close second would have to be my spyderco wegner. Both of them were VERY sharp right out of the box.

Since I have been practicing my sharpening skills though, I can get a knife even sharper than these. Right now the sharpest knife in my house is my busse basic 9. It is a nine inch razor blade!

Honest? A 100 yr old J. Russell "Green River" Sheep Skinner style knife.

Of course, I bought it on a lark, then blasted off all the rust, and sharpened the piss out of it....

Something in the steel I think....a few strokes on a steel, and it'll cut you for looking at it.

I'd like to know what the steel mix is? Anyone?

As I just posted over on the spyderco forum, my new endura is the sharpest knife I have, and that's out of the box. I tested it and it pops freestanding hairs! It's rare that _I_ can manage to get one that sharp, but for one to come from the factory like that surprised the heck out of me. So...

1. New SS Endura
2. Kershaw Whirlwind(rebeveled this baby real good)
3. Spyderco Q
4. Anza NK(the ultimate in an extremely-cheap-ultra-beater fixed blade, IMO)
5. BM AFCK
6. EKI CQC7(probably sharper than it feels, you know them chisel grinds)
7. MT LCC(I dunno what my problem with this one is, but I can only get a decent edge on it, nothing fancy)
8. Timberline Vollotton(the chameleon design)

Then there's a few not worth listing as far as the edge goes.

1 Spyderco Calypso Jr Ltwt
2 Spyderco Bob Lum Chinese Folder
3 MicroTech Socom M/A

Sharpest knife out of the box: Microtech Vector, plain
Sharpest knife in the drawer: A small vegetables knife (“Yatagan”, Herder Solingen). This knife is incredible sharp!

Just got my Random Task back from Kershaw, and man oh man is it sharp.

I sliced off a circle of skin just behind the nail on my index finger (no, not intentionally). What impressed me was that the knife just barely touched my finger, and not only did it slice into my finger, it kept cutting and came back out.

Took 12 minutes of steady pressure just to stop the bleeding.

Brend Model 2

JSP Arch Angel II

Microtech (SOCOM's, LCC's and a HALO)

Kershaw (Random Task, Double Duty and a Double Cross)

Cold Steel (any of them)

CRK Sebenza (couple larges in the regular and classic flavor)

Kit Carson Model 4

DDR EDC

Harold Corby Custom Cobra

Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner in D2. Awesomely sharp. Stays that way for a good long time, too.

Benchmade 804HS AFCK. The edge on that M2 blade is just amazing.

I can't decide between my blue handled Delica or my Sebenza. I would have said the Spyderco, but I just stropped the Sebenza, so they are both scary sharp now.

I agree with the selections of all the other posts. There are a lot of _very_ sharp knives available from factory and custom makers. But, as one who has shaved with a straight razor almost every day for over (40) years, I think I know sharp when I see it. One knife in my collection stands out. It's a "Rugged" Tommi Puukko from Kellam Knives. I have actually cut single free-standing hairs cleanly with it. It shaves like a straight razor.

From the sharpest down:

1) Dozier #6 Custom
2) Kershaw Boa
3) REKAT Sifu
4) CRK Large Sebenza
5) Spyderco Native Shell Inlay

Note that the Sebenza arrived used with a good edge, but it came back from a factory refurb with a greatedge. The fact that it comes in 4th is a tribute to the others, not a negative reflection on CRK.
