What's the strangest thing you've sharpened?

Last night was a first. Although not really "sharpening" it may qualify for reconditioning. Wifey dropped a spoon from her favorite silverware set down the garbage disposal and didn't realize it until you know when.

She was nearly in tears and asked me if I could fix it. The only thing I knew to do was fire up my Loray belt sharpener with a 800 grit belt and slowly grind away the chips and nicks in the metal. After a lot of taste testing and finally feeling no catches on the ole lips I was satisfied it was back to usable. Some polish and the leather belt later I wouldn't say it was back to like new but certainly usable and mama was happy. Of course the funny taste in my mouth was still there from all the testing.

Now if I can just figure out how to get those disposal blades out.

Pic's or it didn't happen :p

Once you understand how to grind and finish metal you find yourself doing all sorts of odd things.

Fixing a scratch in a brushed SS sink, polishing gun parts :D, polishing car parts, polishing anything that can benefit from a more refined and smoother contacting surface, and as you found out fixing damaged metal objects.

Now if you actually tried sharpening the spoon............

That's fair. Pics when I get home tonight. I thought about sharpening the spoon so I could get rid of the table knives. Save time eating having to deal with both utensils, the whole green thing with the water savings from not having to wash knives anymore.

Hummm.....

Along these lines I have polished many things.

Most notable was a fairly expensive knife I received that had a sluggish action. I often pondered the high praise that this knife received on line and I lubed mine many times in vain attempting to get action even as good as less expensive knives I own. Finally, I got disgusted enough that I took the thing apart and polished the mating surfaces, cleaned them and reinstalled everything and suddenly the action of the knife was stellar.

Regarding odd things to sharpen...I have sharpened some odd things, but most notable is my skill set. Sharpen that, and you will go far! The oddest tangible thing I sharpened was a "blade" inside of a tool that is designed to grip a round smooth surface...it took me several attempts to get the angle just right for the one.

Cutting your tongue off with a spoon........ priceless :D

I sharpened a shovel to help chop through roots.

Not too strange, but probably not common.

A lot of my climbing gear benefits from a trip to the belt grinder. It's not too strange for climbers, but it is unusual for most people.

I touch my ice tools up almost every time I climb. I really cringe when my shaving sharp picks go through a thin layer of ice and hit the rock behind.

Crampons, ice screws, and pitons get touched up as needed.

I was presented with a customer's knife that had dropped with the blade closed with the piviot end of the handle onto cement. The impact mushroomed the the SS handle material to the point that the blade could no longer rotate past it. I used the diamond file on a Leatherman Wave and some Spyderco Sharpmaker rods.

I have sharpened a Cold Steel Delta Dart and tanto that was plastic (Zytel, FRN, ?).

I sharpened the spine of a recipricating saw blade, a potato pealer, and fingernail clippers before, any of those qualify?

I also sharpened the end of a prybar because we did not have a chisel along and we needed one. I did that with DMT Diafolds.

I did an antique russian ice saw. It looked like something a cave troll would wield. about four feet long with big nasty bitey teeth!

I once had a request to sharpen a set of butter knives. I sharpened them to a razor and the customer was very happy.

In high school a friend asked me to sharpen the perimeter of a 4 inch diameter galvanized washer. I actually talked him out of it because I knew the steel wasn't going to hold an edge.

Ice auger blades. Not uncommon around here but you wouldn't find them in every corner of the country.

Shovel sharpening is pretty common.

Ice chipper blades? Anyone ever touch up the edge on one of those?

I don't think I've sharpened anything "odd" enough to qualify. Mostly I stick to knives.

The tiger pit stakes weren't shaving sharp, but judging from the screams, they still worked just fine.
