Hi everyone, I'm obviously new to the site.

Can any of you gentlemen tell me if there is a general ruling on the Cold Steel Katana?

Also, what's the deal with Carbon-V and 1050 steel? Is it quality stuff?

Thanks for your advice or info on buying an "affordable" katana.

There are no affordable katanas some would say.
Look at it this way. The CS doesn't cost much. A lot of useless wall hangers cost more.
It's something you can take it out and hack up the back lot and see for yourself without breaking the bank.
That alone makes them somewhat a good value in my opinion.

I just purchased a couple of Cold Steel swords and for the money they are tough to beat. Sure, many of us dislike Cold Steel's advertising tricks and sales techniques but their swords appear to be great for the money. The Paul Chen blades are a little more pleasing to the eye and a little more traditional as well but if you want an affordable Japanese style sword that you can use then goto eBay and purchase a Cold Steel. The Cold Steel Warrior Series is cheaper but appears to be about the same as the more expensive Imperial series as far as durability goes. Don't waste extra money purchasing the Imperial Series.
1050 carbon steel is a common used steel. Canadian Master Smith Wally Hayes uses 1050 steel for many of his custom swords.

Only difference between the Imperial and Warrior series is the hand polished blade on the Imperial. Now after watching the Sword proof DVD I noticed that the imperials cut better than the warriors. This may be due to the smoother blade going through the cutting medium. So getting the blade polished either by sending it out or doing it yourself might be a good idea. I like the look of the polished blade blade a bit more. But would not spend the cash on the Imperials when the Warriors are the same blade.

Hell atleast with the Warriors you have a ligitimate reason to take it out.

"Honey put that thing away."

"I will dear, just a few more minutes and it will work like a rear view mirror."
