I know nothing about it but it sure looks cool in the pics.

Is the steel any good? What about the construction?

It's the same steel - and looks *much* nicer... If looks are a concern, definately go with this model, it's like polished ebony

I read somewhere that it's Boron Carbide coated, is that right?

I know of one company that offers the Black Chive in a black matte, but if you are speaking of subject knife, then I give it a thumbs up. Great little knife IMO. Razor sharp for everyday tasks, and the black chrome-like finish is highly resistant to scratching when amongst change, keys, and the like.

I love it. My only concern is the frame lock. It's worn a bit since I got the knife. And the knife is so small, I wonder how much longer it'll take to reach the far scale. Hopefully, a long time, but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Right now, I highly recommend it as a little inexpensive watch-pocket carry knife.

Boron carbide it is, Bobby. It should prove much more scratch-resistant than other coatings.

My girlfriend gave me one with the boron coating for Christmas...very handy little knife. Kinda weird seeing a knife this small with a pocket clip though. I've carried it a few times already in the bottom of my pocket with no visible scratches.

I took the pocket clip off mine and carry it on my keychain. I had a regular Chive and went to the black Chive to reduce its visibility.I clip my key chain to a belt loop via a carabiner, so it is out there for all the world to see. My job requires visiting elderly persons in their homes and I don't want to cause intimidation. The black coating blends in with the other stuff on the key chain, such as the black coated car key, the remote car lock, the photon light, the carabiner itself, etc. I believe in keeping my defensive blade super sharp for emergencies, so I try not to use it for mundane tasks. This means I use the Chive a lot for such tasks. The Chive is an excellent utility knife. It holds an edge reasonably well and locks up tight. One note: the BC1 coating is super tough, but tends to show fingerprints. I use Renaissance Wax on mine to keep the print marks down. Normally I use Tuf Cloth liberally, but the Ren Wax seems to do a better job of hiding fingerprints

There was a good write-up on the Black Chive, and other BC coated knives, in Blade magazine a few months ago. I read that the Boron Carbide coating has a Rockwell hardness of 97-98, which is pretty impressive. I've got a regular Chive, which is hands down my favorite knife. I don't carry knives bigger than 6" open, so the Chive is perfect for me. The Speed safe opening is great, and it begs to be cycled over and over again "click, click, click!" My Black Chive is going to arrive soon, and I can't wait to get my hands on it! Apparently, BC also has very good lubricity, which leads me to believe that the Black Chive will open even quicker than the regular Chive!

Pardon me, I must go wipe the drool from my chin now!

My uncle has a little knife collection and I was always fascinated by his switchblade. So, this Christmas he got me a black chive. The first time I flipped it open I was like, "WOW!" It opens very fast and is razor sharp. The boron carbide coating not only looks killer but it stands up very well to just about everything that can mar a knife's finish (Ken told me all about it himself). The thing you'll have to get used to is the fingerprints...they are very visible. But, since you don't have to worry about them staining the finish it's really not a problem. You will definately like this knife! I'm just hoping that Kershaw ditches the larger Scallion with it's polymer handles and makes a larger sized Chive...that would be even better!

My black Chive arrived yesterday and I was surprised to see that it is not truly dark black, although it looks like it in photographs. It actually looks very much like gun barrel bluing, and is more of a deep blue-black.

I found an effective way of wiping off fingerprints easily: super suede!
Eye Candy:

The Black Chive is also very reflective (bottom one is the black):
