What's the worst cut/injury you have received from your knives?

Today, I lost the most amount of blood I have ever lost in my life. I was buying food and as I was walking to my car after dark, I reached into my pocket to locate my emerson cqc12 and the blade was open and I received a small cut on my ring finger. My knife has been opening itself 1/3rd of an inch multiple times a day. I think there is something wrong with the detent or locking mechanism because the knife keeps opening in my pocket. The pants I'm wearing are slacks and are different from my usual jeans. A few hours later, when I was in public I reached in again to make sure it hasn't opened and this time it made a very deep cut on my middle finger.

A few seconds later I felt a stinging sensation and two of my fingers were soaked in blood. The unfamiliar warmth of my blood and its stickiness got me slightly worried because although there wasn't much pain, I lost a lot of blood this time. I did not know how deep the cut was or what was going on. Furthermore, I was hoping no one would notice what was going on due to the amount of blood that was coming out of my wound. I located a bandaid 5 minutes later and I wrapped it up real tight.

It's time for me to consider a lockback spyderco or I need to get this emerson fixed. This knife should've came with a box of bandaids.

Please share your stories. Happy holidays and stay safe out there. Sorry about the thumbs up in the title, I was trying to add the thumbs up to the last sentence and I can't edit it out.

hope your finger heals fast before Christmas.

it is a good reminder for the rest of us to always fix these little things before you get hurt.

thanks for the kind words. Usually, I wear jeans and it'll only open itself maybe once a week. But with my slacks, it seems to open every time I reach in. I try to locate it by slowly shifting my fingers in my pockets so I can locate the handle first and then check to see if the blade is partially open. I'm going to shower soon and I hope the wound won't feel like it's being burnt by a blowtorch if some soap gets into it.

sounds like the pivot screw is a bit loose. normal wear shouldnt cause enough movement to have the blade opening so frequently on its own.

My Sebbie got annoyed with me one day and sliced the top right off one of the knuckles on my hand. Had to have a skin graft.

I accidentally closed an SAK awl on my finger once when I was a kid, trying to drill a hole into a plastic bottle top so that I could use the bottle as a water squirter :) I also managed to slice the very tip of my finger off on a Börner food slicer, not so much blood loss but it left quite a spectacular spray pattern up the kitchen wall! Wife wasn't too happy about that one, as I recall ;) I've incurred much worse damage to my hands over the years from various skateboarding and angry-feline related injuries, though :)

Just a few weeks ago I managed to close my CS Kudu wrong and sliced my finger from tip to just below the second joint down with it also takeing out a nice little chunk at the end of the cut bled like crazy and took about 3 days before it wouldnt gush when I changed the bandages. Then theres the time I almost chopped my thumb off with a machete all I can say is thank god I had my bandana in my pocket and a good first aid kit in my car. There have been many more but those are the most recent

My son dropped a knife from our roof and it opened on the way down. It embedded itself into my palm, and I swear it did the "boi-yoi-yoing" sound effect from the Road Runner cartoon.

It is odd to see a knife sticking up vertically out of your hand. "That's not right ...." Now I've got my 8-year old on the roof of the house, my cell phone battery is dead, we're locked out (which is why my son's on the roof with a knife), I've got one good hand and blood dripping everywhere. My 5-year old says, with the infinite wisdom possessed only by the Dalai Lama and 5-year olds, "well, isn't this a whole different kettle of cluster-f**k."

I never ever tell this story when my wife is around, because I committed at least 5 mortal sins of idiot husbandry to pull it off, although I refuse to take the blame for teaching our 5-year what a cluster-f**k is.

a few years back i had myself a little mental health problem. anyways during the few weeks that i was "outta my mind" i was witness to my gf getting bashed by another chick and sort of flipped out and jammed a 4 inch folder through my forearm. by the grace of god it managed to miss the bones, all tendons and Arteries. so, yeah.. not one of my greatest moments.

+1

I have never had a knife open in my pocket like that.

How exactly are you carrying it?

I carry mine clipped to the pocket.

:D

Oh my.

I accidentally left my left index finger in the way of a closing Okapi. Eight stitches went from about the middle of my fingertip to the nailbed. Not fun and not smart.

One cut required medical glue to keep the wounds closed. Another time I slipped and lacerated my thumb and required 4 stitches.

I've been really careful ever since

I was holding a piece of wood in my left hand while whittling and my carving knife slipped and opened up the heel of my hand from the base of my thumb diagonally almost to my wrist. The cut was about two inches long and deep. I actually had to call my neighbor to come over and get the bleeding stopped. It was just a flesh wound so despite everyone's advice I treated it myself with antiseptic and medical glue and it healed just fine. It left a scar about an inch and a half long.

For a while, when my neighbor came over for a few beers on the deck he would make a show of bringing his first aid kit "Just in case." :)

Some years back I was playing with a new Spyderco Military 440v, opening and closing it to smooth it out. Well, I fumbled around and dropped it, it stuck right in the top of my foot (no shoes, just socks on), it stuck between the bones about 1/2" deep...OUCH!! I've got a nice scar to remind me just how pointy those Militarys are!!

1951, I was 9 years old, one night I was using the point of a hunting knife to drill a hole in a soft board that was resting on my left thigh. The wood split, and the knife point went right into my femur artery. Blood was spurting all over the place and I yelled about it. My parents came rushing into my room. My father, a soldier and combat veteran, immediately put a tourniquet on me. My mother went off into the night to find a doctor (in those days there was no 911, no ready ambulances and EMTs). She stopped at a house that had a lot of lights on, turned out it was a party for the medical staff of the local army base. She came back with three army doctors, already half in the bag, they all wanted to see my leg. Well they sewed me up, no anaesthesia. It healed up okay. If that had happened outside when I was off by myself, I would have bled to death within minutes before anybody found me. I owe my father for that save.

Edit: I guess it was a sign of the times, after this accident my parents did not take away my hunting knife or pocket knives. I never again used my thigh for a workbench, but I did experience a few more hand cuts...I just patched myself up and considered it the price of doing business :D

i was cut bad twice by a big bowie i made on my right hand. each cut required 5 stitches, the largest cut was on my palm just above my wrist on the side of my hand.

Not my worst but my most embarrassing was....I fell asleep with my jeans on and my Leek (S30V) was still clipped to my back pocket. I rarely use the lock (mistake) and at some point the Leek came out of my back pocket and opened which eventually resulted in me stabbing myself in the right ass cheek. The knife went in about 1/2 inch....that really hurt. :D

I got slashed with a knife across the forearm ~3" below the hand a few years ago. the cut was the entire width of my forearm and to the bone. It took more then a month to heal because I stupidly wouldn't bother with stiches and cuts have to heal from the bottom up. Not one of my easier lessons in life. Fight with knives, you will get cut!! I think this was my worst cut from a knife, definitely not the most I have bleed. I've had some pretty serrious cuts that there was no way not to get stiches. Afterdark...if this cut made you bleed the most at any point in your life and you just needed a band-aid your doing very well. I need to get stiched up by time I was 5 :):D

Let's see....

A few weeks ago, I sliced my pinky finger with an Opinel paring knife while doing the dishes. Five stitches, nerve damage, muscle damage, unable to move the finger for an estimated 11 months.

I cut the side of my thumb off the very first time I handled a Sodbuster. The blade slammed down from spring tension. No stitches, self-healed. Finger wasn't back to normal for about 9 months.

My wife dropped a standard-issue Kabar on my foot, splitting the nail and leaving a nice gash on my big toe. It was the blade edge; not the tip. I'm still healing from that (3 months ago).

I cut myself the first time I ever sharpened a knife, using the whole testing-the-edge-by-running-my-finger-across-it-like-dad-does technique. Little did I know that dad wasn't running his finger along the entire length of the blade; he was just lightly touching it. I was very glad thatI sucked at sharpening and it didn't cut much flesh.
