hello People,

I just bought 8 m of 3cm thick bars of Ovaco 803. I know that doesn't ring a bell, but the chemical analysis is this: Carbon: 1% Chrome : 1.5 % Managese : 0.35 % Silicium : 0.25 % Sulphur: 0 %. It's made by a swedish firm called Uddeholm, and it costs about 4,5 $ a kilo. in total it cost me 189 $. I thought it was 52100, but the composition doesn't excetly match.
Now, as I am a beginner, any tips in general or particular with this steel?

thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound like a blade steel to me...is it?

Bart,

The closest thing to it seems to be 52100, like you said. Here is the composition of 52100: Carbon-1.10, Manganese-0.35, Silicon-0.35, and Chromium-1.5. It is only off slightly. Perhaps someone knows if this is acceptable in terms of quality control.

hello Folks, thanks for the replies,

But I already know that it is a form of 52100 and that I can forge a knife out of it, and a good one too.
I wanted to know if the price range is O.K. and if there were any special tips concerning this steel. Can I treat it like Ed Fowler says, or not?
If this isn't a blade steel, then why is it inbetween 5160 and 52100? Both are good blade steels. And, by examining several steet-tables, I found that most vary in almost every component. Always wondered why.

thanks , folks.

$5-$6 a kilo? That'd be a great price for 52100, and it looks close enough to be heat treated, but the only way to tell for sure is to try. Try some small test blades for heat treat. I'd love to hear about the results.

Hello Osbourn,

Soon I will have a forged knife of that stuf.
Let me tell how I got, maybe you'll find some over there too. I was looking for big ball bearings, and there is a firm named SKF that produces them over here. I foned SKF, and they told me they get their steel (1.3505) from an other firm, VanLeeuwen. So I foned that guy. They delivered me those bars. Actually it's a pipe-factory, but they also have 52100 in barstock.
Maybe you can check out the pipe-factories over there or the suppliers of the bearings-maufacturers.
Anyone any experience with this kind of steel?
