What's this? Fossil?

What was the nature of the rocks surrounding it? It looks like a shale or possibly slate. Gold mines are typically in igneous rocks although there may be layered rocks that the mine passed through the get to their mining objectives.

I assume you're talking about an underground mine also. Google tree fossils pictures and you should see something very similar to what you have.
 
Yes horizontal shaft with perpendicular branches in shale. Probably coal, but i was told gold and was going under that assumption. Thanks for your help.
 
Looks like lepidodendron. Found identical pictures found in coal seams. Thanks again.
 
That be correct. That is a very nice example and I would save it. What state or country was this in?
 
I know there is gold in North Carolina and Georgia historically, but I've never heard of gold in Alabama. Fun to find stuff and enjoy it. I still have what people call "Petrified Palm" from Texas that I always intended to make book ends out of it. Never happened, but it makes a good door jam. I have a nice big chunk of coal from KY that is actually really nice with the colors and fractures.

Be very careful going inside abandoned coal mines. A fist sized rock from the roof hitting you might kill you. There are potential air issues.
