Hi.guys!
I've been away from this forum for a good while, but I still have my collection of U.S.Schrades.
Once in a while I look at a few on eBay.
This one caught my attention last week and I asked Dale about it,but he didn't recognise it either:

I like Herman Miller's work, but I've never seen a 61OT,with a serrated blade and a shield like that one, that was made at Ellenville.
I'm guessing that this may be a recent knockoff by the Tennessee Mafia, produced by some US maker for them.
Now you folks can enlighten me!
thanks!

That knife was sold by Herman himself! That's his ebay name.

Herman was a long time customizer of Schrade knives, even directly for the factory dating back to the early Eighties. He has for some time now added his own touch by adding a blade not normally in certain positions on a knife, added blades and also as this example used a serrated blade not usually found on a 61OT.

herman williams is the only schrade ellenville factory authorized repairman customizer i have ever heard of. he told me that there were 2 counterparts at one time but that he didnt know what became of them. he went on to tell me that any knife he made was considerd to be a authentic schrade knife recognized by the plant. so in my opinion any knife customized by him is "schrade factory fresh" and as pure as they get. -----brady

I will add "upper shelf" to that Schrade Factory Fresh label.

Herman is really good at what he does.

He did these for me this summer. Herman is a stud!

Yes he did. I had to wait a little while, but once he fit it in to his schedule, he did both of them in one day.

Herman sure does some fine work! That 61OT was a nice snag for someone. Hal, your knives are more examples of his talent. Glad to hear he is doing some work besides just the ebay stuff. I contacted him about a year ago about doing a couple knives for me, but he said he wasn't taking on any extra at that time. May have to try again.

To expand a little on Russell's post, Mr. Williams is not simply adding his beautiful scales to an existing older knife. He takes the knife completely apart first and polishes up all the parts, even the inside surface of the liners, on which he sometimes stamps his name and the current date. If one of the blades is a little worn, he'll use the same pattern blade from another knife.
Since the tangs and pivot hole placement could differ from one run to another, sometimes the result is a little bit of blade play.
I learned this from Mr. Williams after returning one of his customizations because of what i thought was excessive blade play. He explained to me how this can occur with the work he does and that he should have 'caught' this before listing it. He made me another knife of the same pattern and this one has a 100% tight lock-up.

The last two Herman did for me were handle replacements, but he still had to disassemble the knives. He even sent me back the existing Delrin handles, all in one piece. I've noticed recently, Herman has been making some unique knives, by swapping out different Schrade blades. Some of them are really cool too. One in particular was an 881 stockman with a cap-lifter/screwdriver blade, instead of a spay. How cool is that?

These knives by Herman are just too nice. Every time you talk about it, it costs me more to get one. :D. I will be a contender in upcoming offers. :D

I know where your coming from Cal. I am fortunate enough to have two of Herman's pieces and they are the two most expensive pieces in my collection as far as what I have paid for them. I might add that they are worth every penny!
