Hey just figured I would drop a line from Lackland AFB as a newly graduated Airman. I also kinda got a weird question that I'll probably get answered soon but hey are we in Tech(AIT) Training allowed to carry knives. It has been a long 10 weeks without my toys. I know Air Force basic is only 6\7 weeks but i got held up for medical reasons so I got the extended visit. It may be a little while before I can check this post so no one be offended if I do not respond for awhile. :D

Oh, man, I got out of Lackland in 1965 so I don't know what the rules are today but I bet: no knives :) Congratulations on your Air Force service, though! Definitely the most civilized of the services -- sometimes we weren't sure if we were really military :p (The Army guys around us were sure we were not!)

Congrats! Tech School should be a breeze and as far as carrying knives in Tech...forget about it. Wait until you get to your first duty station to worry about carrying knives.

Congratulations! Nothing's certain, but we were allowed to carry ours at Army AIT, so there's hope. Check the SOP when you get to your new unit.

Yeah actually just found out we are allowed to have them as long as they dont pass a 3" blade. Man tech is a breeze compared to basic and thanks for the replies.

I thought you guys called it summer camp, not basic? :p JK, I know the feeling. It took me about a month to get used to eating as much as a I wanted at the dining facility (and of course I gained about 20 lbs in the process  )

I left lackland in nov. 1986,went to Chanute AFB for AIT,then spent three years at Aviano, AB, Italy. At that time ( except basic ) I carried a slip joint of one kind or another without any problems during AIT. Could be different now.
The Air Force is a great place to be , sometimes I wish I would have stayed in.

good luck

Kyui Su Kim,
Way to go and an excellent pick for military duty. Air Force is the way to serve.

Jon,
I left Lackland in Nov 86 also. We probably marched past each other every day. :) I went to Keesler AFB for my 11 months of training. :( When did you get out?? Just wondering. I always enjoyed my air conditioned tent when I was in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. AIM HIGH!!

Missed this thread the first time around.

I did my time at Lackland in Basic, then spent another 6 mos. there for AIT (crypto school). That was back in late 85-early 86.

I mentioned this before. When we got our first off base liberty, I went into San Antonio and headed for the first knife shop I could find. I bought a little fake pearl handled fury stilletto. I sneaked it back in and stashed it in my personal drawer. I can only imagine what they would have done to me if they had found it. I still have that knife.

When I got into Tech school, I was buying up knives left and right. One day they had a surprise inspection, and found some of my knives. I didn't get into trouble, but they kept them. The Msgt. in charge was sympathetic, but rules were rules. I started stashing them in the battery compartment of my boom box from then on. ;)

I still have this big Taylor-Seto stag handled Tanto fix blade from back then, that I bought at a flea market, as pristine as the day I bought it. And I got a kissing crane stilletto from Back then too, with the tip of the blade bent from when I dropped it and it stuck into the floor.

I did my four and got out. I still miss that life sometimes. My wife misses the BX. :p

Great choice Kyui Su Kim, and thanks for all that you do to protect this country...

blades,

I got out just a few months before desert storm, due to some marital strife.
Have regretted it ever since, would of had only two years till retirement.

Thanks for everyones supports for the military. Sometimes I will be eating lunch or working CQ and see all the news on people who don't support us and just try to sympathize with the terrorists.

But anyway, it seems like they don't mind the knives. A lot of the other students carry them and everyone is pretty responsible about there use. Funny thing is my roommate would always say " Why do you need a knife for" and then he would ask me for something to cut a package with. :p
