All of the manufacturers have a cult following.
I'd disagree with that. I drive a Ford F-150, but if I couldn't (and had to drive a Chevy Silverado), life would still go on. I've driven Fords for a long time, but there are many things I like about Chevy trucks. I really don't feel the need to completely lay waste to Chevy drivers because they prefer a vehicle I don't, nor am I blind to the positive aspects of Chevy trucks. But on some knife forums, opinions on knives evoke more evisceral reactions than insulting one's family.
I don't think the "cult mentality" of Strider owners is promoted, provoked, or sanctioned by either of the Strider guys. I'm sure they've gotta love having diehard customers for their knives, and how could they not? FWIW, I'd love to own a Strider, and will at some point, I'm sure I will.
This cult mentality manifests itself when somebody posts a fairly inocuous statement in a post like "Mick was seen at the SHOT Show wearing a sweatshirt and jeans," or something as meaningless. Okay then. But the next 6 or 7 posts read something like this:
Post 1. "Mick
rocks!!!!
Post 2. "Mick
totally rocks!!!!
Post 3.
Mick is badass!!!
Post 4.
Mick is sooooo badass!!!
Post 5. Striders
forever!!
Post 6.
Mick forever!!
(We don't have the emoticon here, or each one of those examples would be punctuated with several "rocks" smilies, and I mean several for each post!)
It's as though if you own a Strider and don't make such a ridiculously hyperbolic statement, all the other Strider owners will somehow question your loyalty to Strider Knives. To say that some of those supporting posts lack a certain amount of maturity and intelligent commentary would be overstating the obvious. Sometimes you would think the comments are based on Dana Carvey's "Wayne's World" characters, but written with knives in mind. I'm really surprised there is no emoticon yet that shows that cartoon character that takes a leak on a Ford or Chevy logo, and is redesigned for the Strider, Busse, and Swamp Rat crowds. Think of the possibilities!
