What's Up With The Price Of Customs

I've noticed that the price of customs have droped dramatically recently. I know about supply & demand but a MV1 went for $995 at Nordic knives. That's the lowest I ever saw a MV1 go for. Especially from a dealer.

If you look at the last couple of large knife shows that Emerson has held a lottery at there have been approx 30 customs at each show. Take that along with people getting the knives they ordered some time ago and the price of new dated examples of certain knives, especially the CQC6 and Viper 1 have dropped in the after market.

At the same time the value of non-dated examples of the same knives have held their value or have gone up. This was discussed in a thread over the Summer:

What we are seeing is exactly what was predicted.

Absolutely, David. Current prices have made certain pieces ultra tempting. Appears to be an excellent time to make a few choice acquisitions.

BTW, I don't imagine that BMW's have gotten any less expensive. How do you like the new ride, David? Looks awesome in the pic! :)

Ernie auctions off customs for purchase at knife shows. Those that purchase them for reselling are expereincing a glut on the market and the resistance of people like me who can afford the prices but have an intellectual problem paying the prices that individuals whose only interest in collecting or purchasing an item is re-sale. I personally do not purchase knives thru resellers unless it is a knife that has been produced for the reseller and has had no prior ownership. My interest is not in making money, not in collecting everything there is, but in the relationship between my self and the custom knife maker to produce a superior knife.- Dick

I have to agree guys, it's the sudden surge of customs on the market. (I hear tell Mary has chained Ernie to the grinder :D)

That having been said, look at the customs that are popping up a bargian prices, 99% are 2000 and 2001 customs, aka more common. Nothing at all wrong with them, in fact the ones I have see are PERFECT. But many collectors want, and keep the stuff that's hard to find. I don't think you'll find a blowout on halfmoon sixes or Specwar no date ES1-Ms (ect).

This is actually a pretty damn good turn of events for all the Suspects. Most would love a carry custom, but who among us wants to carry a Pre-Tac when you can pick up a resonable CQC6? (OK,OK hands down Alan and Don) ;)

Due to the low cost, & supply of dated customs being available, I got two additional customs in one week. I guess it's a good thing.

Eric,
The BMW rides NICE.Thanks :D Best part of it, it's free. Company gave it to me. :D :D (My company, not BMW)

I would think people would be HAPPY custom prices are dropping - I know I am! I always thought 1,200 +/- for a knife was a LOT, even for something fairly rare. I know all about supply vs. demand. I can undersatnd why the prices are so high, I just can't justify the purchase. Now that they're dropping, I can. :D It's a GOOD thing!
