What's up with this shield?

Good morning folks

I'm having trouble finding info or additional photos regarding the shield in the photos below.

Other than the obvious info gathered from the images, I cannot find anything about it.

Does it have a specific name? Was it only used by NY Knife Co? Was it only used on the jack pattern depicted in the photo? Heck, was it ever used at all? Do you happen to have a knife with this shield you could share photos of?

I'm quite fond of it, and feel it has an art deco look to it. I think, as it comes to shields, it resembles a torch(just spitballing)...but "torch shield" yielded no fruitful results.

I've looked through several NY Knife Co threads and shield threads on this and other forums to no avail. A lot of great info, and beautiful photos...just not of this shield - that I could find.

Please don't hesitate to point me in the right direction if there's an existing thread better suited for this query.

Thanks!

The only thing I could find is that it is a variation of the "gimp" shield, and was used by the NY Knife company. This was from an article in Knife magazine, which likely used the document you posted as a reference.

Sorry I can't help, but I don't know the answer. I have never seen a shield like that either in person or in pictures of actual knives.

Your post shows it as a Gimp variation and thus unusual. Row 4 right.
Thank you Will. I included those images to represent the few things I do know about the shield.:)

While it does fall into the category of a gimp variation, I was hoping there may be a more specific name (even if only utilized by the NY Knife Co.)

My searches for NY Knife Co, and Hammer Brand have, thus far, been fruitless.

I was literally just on the auction site and saw this shield in a listing and was thinking the same thing and saw this thread! Crazy.

Wow! If you can find it again, could share a photo, or search topic, or message me with a link? If you don't mind of course. I'd love to see a real photo of one.

Thanks!

Now that I looped back I realized quickly I was mistaken.. I got excited because I was searching nyk co specifically but I think the shield I saw was a variation of a bomb shield and maybe not that uncommon with them. Sorry for the false alarm I should have noted the sharper lines on the one you posted.

Well I bottomed out as well, I remembered one of the old collector books I found had a couple pages of shields. They're even numbered as if there was a list for more information, sadly it just says

Jim Parker strikes again! Information on Case shields but none of the others:mad: Did he own Case in 1985? Anyways there is a pic of the shield in question however no information. I even scoured the book hoping for a picture of one on a knife,to no avail.

Thanks David!

I see some other shields on that page that I get the impression were specific, or at least primarily used by NY Knife Co.

While we are both left wanting more, I'm glad it was at least referenced in another publication.

I know there's a lot of shields, and perhaps not every one has a special name, or much history behind it, but I am a bit surprised that I haven't seen this one at least once on a real knife - or photo thereof.

We all have different tastes, and I know many may not be as intrigued with it as I am, but I wonder if it was found to be offputting or unpopular in some way that they never utilized it.

Looks more like a Bishop's Mace to me ....
I looked those up after your post, and agree that it does strike a resemblance to those, as well as some clubs.

Mace shield, bishop shield, club shield all have been dead ends so far though.

I've accepted the notion that perhaps there is no name for it, or it has some off the wall name that you couldn't guess by looking at it. Such as "marigold shield" or "kitten shield" or "Debbie".
