What's up with this?

I just ran across (and bought) this one and I'm confused a bit about it. The old style Bucklite with a 2011 date stamp. Could it be a buildout?

It's similar David, but not the same. Here's my old 442 (same as the one with the 2011 stamp) and the gift tin knife. The handles are different and you can see a definate difference in the plade profile.

I received the same knife as pictured in the op for Christmas. I have been really impressed with it, this is only the second Buck knife I have. What information do you need to find out a Buck's production year?

Since 1986 the year of manufacture (of regular production knives) is shown by a symbol to the right of the model number except for two years. In 2002 the model number was replaced with a stamp of an anvil and in 2005 the "date stamp" was an outline of the state of Idaho to the left of the model number. Prior to '86 they use a series of dots to the right and left of the model number. Before that, it gets a little more complicated but info can be found here by doing a search.

Wow! My old one is older by 8 years than the one in that auction and in much better condition, maybe I should list it!

I saw some of these at the factory sale last month. They were in the closeout case. IIRC they were priced at $10 or $15.

I'm still comfused a little about these new 442's. Here's another one with a 2010 date stamp, but they aren't in the 2010 catalog or the price list.
