Same model at different stores state steel as 5160 and 80crv2...I don't think he offers a steel option..did he decide to work with a different steel, why...which would you choose to buy if given the choice?

yes I had heard that he just started using 80crv2 aka L2 aka 1080 +. I would go with 80crv2 I think that it has better edge retention and acceptable toughness. put I have no experience with either.

I believe most of the knives are 52-100 while the hawks are 5160. The 80CRV2 I heard he was moving to, but I don't have experience with it. If he's using it you can rest assured it's good.

Yes 52-100...I got the wrong numbers...since both 51-100 and 80CVR2 are available I am faced with a choice and I'm not familiar with either one, but then why second guess the Maker...he must have good enough reasons to make the switch..

A quote from Mr.Winkler himself.

We are now in the process of changing to 80CRV2 steel. It has great performance and I can use it for both axes and knives.

Been looking hard at the wk II belt knife this week- I'll be watching this thread with interest. Hope some owners chime in.

That man makes some Serious Tools. I'd trust his decision without reservation. His entire market would fall out from under him if his tools stopped holding up under extreme abuse. I believe he understands this very well.

I have decided to order a Hunter model tomorrow from Nordic Knives and get the 80CVR2 steel......I seem to always be searching for the perfect hunting knife..I have 3 I will be selling soon...it's all good fun

I've got the Spike. Awesome knife. A wee bit bigger than the Belt knife. Get one. You won't be disappointed. The sheath is Kydex/leather. Great design.

I ordered the Hunter model Monday, will be here Thursday....I will be brown bear hunting the end of the month and hope to skin one out with the new knife....

I started producing the Winkler Knives II product line back in 2008. I had been forging and having good results with 5160, 1084 and 52-100 for many years but could only find 5160 in bars large enough to do the quantities I needed so the early knives and axes were made from 5160. Later I found a source for full sheets of 1084 and 52-100 so I switched the knives to one of these two steels depending on availability.

There are a few models that needed more specialized performance so I developed the SAR using cpm154 and the Rescue Axe from S7 or H 13. (again depending on what was available) We also do some special orders from cpm3v and arte in the process of developing some new designs to be made from the 3v.

Last year I did a full test on 80CRV2 and found it to be better than 5160, 1084 and 52-100 so I am in the process of changing all but the specialty models of both the knives and axes to the 80CRV2.

This is not saying that the earlier knives are inferior but is a statement that as new materials and processes come along we will make changes to improve our products. All our products have a lifetime guarantee regardless of the steel used.

Mr. Winkler..thnx for taking the time to respond with that interesting bit of information...I'm looking forward to working with my new Hunter model...What angle would be best for sharpening it to...any comments or suggestions would be appreciated...thnx again oneriver

I love my beltknife, looks like there has been a slight change in the choil which I think should be an improvement. This blade is as good looking as it is practical!

I much prefer the old “choil” which acted as a much better guard. It also looked like it was done by hand?

The new handle looks like it was stamped or CNC cut with some hard 90° edges.

I’m not sure why it was done but I don’t like it.

Cost savings?
