What's with all the writing on knife blades? Removable?

One thing I've noticed recently is that a lot of knives, such as the Camillus CUDA EDC have a lot of wording printed in ink on the blade. What's up with that and is there an easy way to remove it that doesn't involve refinishing the entire blade? I feel like they are trying to put a billboard in my pocket.

I have to agree with you lurker.

Have you seen the MOD "Pointman" or whatever the model is called. Very nice knife but the writing  How much does it have to say more than maybe what knifesteel was used and a small company/maker logo.

Another example: The Buck Strider first edition folders. Sheesh, the writing doesn´t even follow the lines of the knife. Love the knife though - got me a later edition...

I guess you wouldn't like Masters Of Defense knives either. The lettering on blades don't bother me at all. In fact it's nice to see a knife company's logo, steel type, model number/name and who designed it etched on the blade. It shows they take pride in their product. I see nothing wrong with the lettering on the Camillus EDC.

I dislike all the writing too, it reminds me of those garish self promoting adverts on t shirts, polo shirts, etc. Leave the lettring off or, at best have small insignia like chris Reeve on handle.

I don't mind a little descriptive information on the blade, such as on the EDC. Text often wears down or off and just looks like partially erased text. What I don't like are the etched and/or plated pictures that German makers like to put on blades. Don't like laser cut designs in my blades like Buck has played with.

I don't like the advertising, either. I really wish that any necessary information was restricted to the ricasso area, and then unobtrusively engraved or stamped. I suppose some folks are actually attracted to a knife partly because of the advertising, for the gee whiz factor. Apparently, the makers believe that is the case.

to answer the question of removing them(the writing) takes about 5minutes to buff it right off to a semi-mirror finish.Buffer+Cottonbuffer wheel+red/white rogue=no more writing!!:D
