My favorite Case knife -- I gave my dad TWO of them. Is their slimline, two-bladed trapper. Now, they keep trying to sell
%$#@*&($% ONE-bladed trappers; (like a one-bladed is so much slimmer, yeah, right ){--- like they can't see the use in a spey blade, anymore}; and they just dont put out many models at all of the slimline type. Heck, --we know stag is not found on Case's planet anymore. of course. --- I keep looking . . .if I see a bone-handled, slimline, two-bladed trapper, I'm going to buy at LEAST FOUR of them, for future gifts. ---- J. D. Martin

I am with you on this J.D. for the life of me I do not understand why they do not produce a two bladed version of this fine pattern.

The reason Case doesn't make a two-blade slim line trapper is because with their current cutler skill level it would have to be renamed the Big Fat Trapper!

Bastid,

We're right, Case are UTTER FOOOOLS!!!
I LIKE the slimline pkg, it IS thinner, the blades are (same length but) slimmer -- you get just as much edge. The folder is lighter in weight. You would think this is the direction comtemporary design would be moving in. You carry the slimline (two-blade) trapper awhile, then switch to the heavy-weight trapper, it feels clunky, fatter,,,,, I'm mad, MAD!!! It's like Case is saying, if you want to carry a case trapper, you MUST choose a folder design that is a mesomorph (df="characterized by powerful musculature and a predominantly framework"); you have NO OPTION to carry a folder design that is 'ectomorphic' (df="Lean and slightly muscular") Maybe I would be forced to the mesomorphic type if, say, I was a forest ranger or ranger or farmer, etc.; if I made heavy-duty use of my folder and so needed the added heft for frequent tough cuts. But, hey, what about us lightweight suburban types who dont need a fat pkg of steel sagging in our pockets? I'm MAD MAD. What if I want a Kevin Costner-type knife, what if I dont want an AAAAhnowld SssschwAAATAHHTZZZnayguhh-style pocketknife, the favorite of the
pumped-up/injection vet-types.
And a ONE-bladed trapper? Case wants me to buy that? Oh MAN. You know, people in HELL want icewater. To tell the truth, I would like to hear from somebody how much slimmer a one-bladed trapper is than a two-blader (regular and slimline test subjects would be terrific, of course).

I'm MAD, MAD.

Now I'm NOT mad. I cant STAY mad INDEFINITELY, can I? I'll get MAD again when I think about what Case has done, later.

:p

(I put a 'cool' face, the one with sunglasses, before each post, because, well, yes I AM a coooool guy, but hey I live a little ways outside L. A., like, man, acourse, aCOURSE I LIVE in my sunglasses. What---where you live, it isnt sunny and in the 70's 80% of the days of the year? I member a James Garner movie, him and this chick were in a motel room, the shades were dowm...the girl started poking her nose thru the window shade, trying to peek out. Garner says "What are you doin'?" Girl: "I'm trying to see what it's like outside."
Garner: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN? YOU'RE IN L. A.!!! IT'S LIKE IT ALWAYS IS OUTSIDE IN L.A.!!!!"

Durwood (if I screwed up your name I'm sorry),

Really? Is it true that Case craftsmanship has gone south? What a tradition it is---you just look in like a knife 'encyclopedia' like the one by C. Houston Price, and the section covering Case is like as long as the next five biggest combined. My dad has always sweared by them, didnt, just, buy a new one when his old one had problems; he carefully packaged it up and sent it back for the CAse craftsmen to repair. I bought him a couple of the Case 2-blade slimline trappers and he really took to them. Hey, he's not a young roughneck on drilling rigs anymore [[[not that the Prime Tool of a drilling rig hand was ever a pocketknife; try channel locks]]], and he doesnt need that kind of heavy-duty, weighted-up, extra-muscles folder model; he's retired now, he putters and has hobbies, and does benchwork and yardwork: the slimline did all he needed it to do, but wasnt bulky, chunky, burly, chubby, lumpy, plump, stocky, built-like-a-coke-machine, the way the regular trapper was.
NOW I'M MAD AGAIN. GGGRRRRRRAR. I WISH I HAD THE CASE PRESIDENT HERE, AND HAD MY OLD CHANNEL LOCKS,.... WE WOULD GET THIS STRAIGHTENED OUT I FREAKIN' GUARANTEE YOU.

Seriously, I would like to hear from a Case representative. This seems a retrograde, regressive action---I would like to hear the maarketing strategy behind it.

J.D. To appreciate where Case quality has gone one must first examine their knives from 1970 and before. This is the period of Case knives that I love and collect and also use when I find one that isn't quite perfect. My favorite patterns are small stockmans 6333 and 6327, these are perhaps the most mutated from their original state. They once were slim, durable and gorgeous, now they are thick, nonfunctional and ugly.

JD:

They did bring back the two blade slim trapper for about 2 years, in the pocket worn green bone series and then in the vintage stag series. This was 1998-2000. You may still be able to find these.

You are RIGHT, though, the 62048, 62048SSP, and 32048 were all great patterns, slimmer, lighter, and less expensive than the full trapper. They were VERY POPULAR among users when they were made up through the 70's.

Durwood:

I could not agree more on Case's hafting abilities - especially evident on the smaller patterns as you mention. The '27, '33 and the Eisenhower.

If you look at older examples of these and other small patterns, you get nice thick (relative to the pattern and size) blade stock and strong springs, with nicely thinned handles and bolsters.

Now you get too thin blade stock, poor blade action, and chunky boxy handles.

I have always said, you can best gauge a company's skill at making knives by looking at their small penknife patterns.

Knifeaholic,

By accident I landed on your screen again, so I reread what you wrote: excellent remarks that help gauge the 'fit and finish' on a folder. You're a smart guy, despite your hopeless addiction. Maybe you should try to substitute a less debilitating jones, maybe, um, heroin? amphetemines?

:p  :barf:    --- J. D.

Yes, good suggestion....herion would probably be less expensive...and less of a strong addiction....than these @#$%#$#@ slipjoints.....
