Hi good people. I searched for a thread on the background to the use of skulls for beads and logos/graphics in some cases, but couldn't find any info.

What's the fascination with skulls? I'm intrigued if it's a fashion or there's a specific history or meaning I'm unaware of. Does anybody know or have ideas?

Looking for knowledge not a fight about whether they're :) or:(
Thanks

It's just something that's gotten popular over the past few years. I saw a lot of military/logo t-shirts with them, more or less "I'm a tough guy" gear.

Personally, I don't need it. Skulls and skeletons always meant anthropology to me, anything else I find confusing. :D

Human skulls are a symbol of impermanence. It's a reminder that we're here on a temporary basis. I just think they look cool.

That and the zombies. Why is everything zombie this and zombie that and let's go zombie killing and zombie huntin...Oh shut up. It's old.

Thanks Tyrkon for the ESEE link - it makes sense. That interpretation/meaning speaks to the owner of the skull. It probably works the other way as well - i.e. a threatening warning sign/symbol to enemies that suggests "You mess with me, you wind up dead" (a'la the pirate theme).

That's probably why it's also popular with military people (Esav). Thanks guys for your input.

I guess skulls are really good at handle scratching. Do not see any other use.

Blade magazine did a good story on the new trend of skulls on knives and knife related gear, I forgot what issue it was, but it had a Strider custom on the cover.

I wear a skull ring (Punisher-type skull). I always thought the Punisher's skull looked badass. A pretty nurse saw it a few days ago and thought it was hilarious. :o
