I bought an etching unit from a friend and the "marker" was basically trashed. I bought a new marker from IMG about 3 years ago and have now been through either three or four of them...they basically fall apart on me. I am only a hobby knife maker, not full time, so it's not like I am marking 250 knives a year if you know what I mean.
The marking unit is their plastic tubed unit, with a carbon head, and the carbon head has basically disintegrated and fallen apart in less than a year each time. This unit costs me about $75 or so if I remember correctly. They replaced the first one, but the other one's came out of my pocket.
This last one was the last straw....I bought it, marked, oh 10 knives with it, and took great pains to wash it off and dry it after each use, store it safely, etc. I come out to my shop and the damn carbon head has cracked and the plastic tube has split FROM JUST SITTING THERE.
I love the marker, as it gives me great results when working...but I can't for the life of me understand why this is happening. After this happened the first and second times, the only response I got from IMG Electromark was basically "We don't know why this is happening". I have seen posts before that their etchers were not considered top notch from other folks, but I don't know if that is the case or not.
Any suggestions? Much appreciated in advance.
