What's wrong with my fang?

All right, I got a Fang about a month ago off of someone on the knives for sale form. It was new and unused, in the original packaging. When I got it, it was sorta sharp, so I took a sharpmaker 203 to it. No results. since then I've tried my arkansas bench stones which i'm pretty good with and still no luck. I know I can sharpen a knife, because I've got a Ka-Bar which is really wickedly sharp and I'm the one who made it that way. I honestly don't believe that I'm doing anything wrong, for some reason it WILL not take an edge. I think it may have a defective heat treat, the edge was developing a huge burr that wouldn't come off everytime I tried to sharpen it. I know it probably isn't covered under a warranty because I'm not the original owner, but I'd like to know what's wrong with it and if it can be fixed or if I'm SOL. Sorry if this reads sort of confronational, I just tried to sharpen it for the 5th time and its duller than when I started. PLEASE help Bob!

That sounds odd. I assume that it is 1095; I think they all were. I didn't have any problem with my Utility knife, which is also 1095. It did take me quite a while, it seemed, to get it to the way I wanted it. I only used the brown sticks of the sharpmaker, and got it to the point that it will shave pretty readily, and slice fingers at the drop of a hat (don't ask me how I know). FWIW.

It was my first experience with 1095, and it was a little different from my ATS-34's and GIN-1's, etc...

I own both the 1095 and an ATS34 models of the Fang. Both are extremely sharp and easy to get that way. If the great guys at REKAT can't help (and I am sure they can), send me your knife and I'll see what I can do with it.

Seriously, I don't think its my sharpening that's doing this. I have a Ka-bar in 1095 and its the sharpest knife I own, I made it that way. I just got a scrade hunting knife yesterday, real nice knife but dull as a brick. After about an hour on the bench stones it was shaving hair. Its not that I don't know how to sharpen, I've been doing that since I was 10 years old. The edge rolled vey easily while I was sharpening it, I think that it has a soft heat treat or something to that nature.

It would be unsual for one knife to be soft as they are all heat treated in the same batch at the same time.Return it and we will see whats up.

Thanks Bob, I think I'll take one more shot at sharpening it just to be totally sure its not me. If it still won't work, I'll send it in. Just to make sure you know, I did not buy it from a dealer, it was off of an individual. He hadn't ever used it though.

Bob, I'll vouch for it being new, I bought two of them, and sold one of them to Roadrunner. If you need anything from me, let me know. BTW mine is great!

Roadrunner.... I'll try to get you a scan of my green para-cord wrapped Fang in a day or so. Thanks

Thanks Excalibur, I appreciate your offer. I was trying to remember who I bought it off of. Guess that answers my question. Thanks again.

I have both the 1095 and ats34 fangs.
When I first tried to sharpen them with the sharpmaker, after a few hours of repeated effort and no results, I just gave up. Put them in the tool box and forgot them.
Later I tried the edge pro apex. Both came out hair popping sharp. Those edges are very hard. They are probably harder than anything else in my collection!! Had to use the extra curse 180 grit to get a new bevel started, and that took a while. Finally polished with 4000 to a mirror edge. Havent needed to sharpen them since.
Nice little knives once you get them sharp.

Good design, very useful.
Ben Dale of Edge pro will sharpen it.
I will look up the web site if you are interested.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?
And just what are you going to do with this one that you can't do with the others?
What is the purpose of all these knives anyhow??

Gonesailing, I think you may be right. Maybe I'm just not grinding it long enough. I might send it to edgepro (thanks, i've already got the address), see what he can do with it. Sorry for flipping out like that Bob, I was just really frustrated when I wrote that. I sincerely apologize.
