What's Wrong With The Q?

I've never read any bad comments regarding the Q but it I don't see it mentioned too much on the forums. Does anybody have one? How do you like it?

I don't have one. I doubt I'll ever buy a knife that can't be used for spreading peanut butter.

Do people buy these because of the cut-out pattern in the blade, or in spite of it?

I'll admit it...I have 2 of em'. I used to use the heck outta it because it was cool looking. I don't carry it anymore because I carry larger knives now. The only thing I don't like about the "Q" is the clip. It's a cool design, however, I've lost 2 of em' in a month. The other one I bought for my girlfriend and she loves it. -AR

P.S. Have you seen a "Q" with an "HK" or an American Flag in the design??? These are really cool. -AR

Ah, the Spyderco "Q" (C35). I have one, a plain edged one. Not much of a utility folder. But the blade steel is decent (440C, if I got it correctly) and gets a nice edge easily, the thing weighs next to nothing (1 oz, 28g), though it has a 2½" blade, and I seem to get a good grip of it in both front- and reverse grip. The "high-tech offset SpringLock" seems to work OK, though it doesn't feel sturdy in any way. The "patented offset SpringClip", which can be repositioned in four ways (both L and R, both tip-up and -down), clamps very lightly, but that might not matter much because of the light weight of the knife.

The "fiberglass-reinforced nylon resin" handle is unexpectedly thick (and this doesn't show on most photos). It ("Zytel") can be smoothed out easily with a Dremel, a piece of sandpaper, or even with a knife (and then you'll get instant sharpening exercise

), but a considerably thinner handle, maybe of aluminium or carbon fiber, would be an improvement. As a regular pocket knife it isn't of much use, because it gathers a lot of dust etc. due to the many holes.

All in all, a curiosity, I'd say.

Come on, don't be shy!

I'm sure there are more than a few "Q"-owners, users, prospectors, and thinkers around. And from a veeery reliable source I've heard that a company even makes those!

You see the "Q" on the logo of this very forum. Please, elaborate your thoughts about *what* the piece might be, ideally, and what would YOU improve on it.

Also, it would be nice to hear in public the "official" justification for the "Q".

Just going to interject before you guys get rolling...

The "Q" is discontinued....whatever the stores have, is all they're getting....

If you want one...grab one now.

Hey, Danelle...any idea how many American Flag "Q"'s were made. I might have to pick one up before they become extinct. -AR

Alright, alright...did some checking, found out there were 4000 American Flag "Q"'s made.

There are still some out there..I know for a fact, just checked on some for a customer a couple of days ago.

Good Luck!

I've got a "Q". I like it a lot due to it's compact size and light weight. What I DON'T like about it is I don't trust it to stay closed in my pocket and when withdrawing it. The fact that it's sharp as heck doesn't make me any more comfortable.

As for a legit use, I thought it would be the perfect Knife for a survival kit. It has a good blade design for general use and if you clamp your thumb down on the locking mechanism, it probably won't close up on you at an inopertune moment. Having gutted and skinned an Elk with a Gerber LST, I am sure the Q could do the same in a pinch.

Overall I like it!

Now that's a nice strategic move, Danelle! To discontinue a model somebody asks sincerely "what's wrong" with it.

I wonder, if (somebody like) Frank would ask "what's wrong" of some *other* Spyderco model and some of us forumites would say something justifiedly critical about it, would it also work? Might that be a method of unchaining the company of excessive SKU's (dunno whuzzat, hope I used that correctly)?

Ah, you KM's (and GC's) do have your ways!

But, in the end, it's nice to see that the 'Q', a DISCONTINUED model, is still the official "flag" of the Spyderco Forum.

Are the Q'S going to be available for special orders by companies with their logos?
Can we get some sort of list of the companies that have purchased them for resale? I only have found 9 with different designs in addition to the 12 different color and finish variations that Ironstone had.

Thanks

Bobby

This is for the Spyderco "R", a larger
version of the "Q". I would imagine at this
point Spyderco is just going to do most custom logo work with this big guy instead of the little Q.

You can certainly fit more of a logo on a three-inch blade.

At this time, there are probably more than 50 diffeent blade designs. Most of the companies didn't want their blades available to collectors. Sorry, We are currently discouraging "Q" sales. the knife is more difficult to make than it appears and it is really not a profitable venture, abeit a lot of fun. we are making some for older customers on previous designs.

The "R" will probably just be an occassional short run. It is also expensive, but very unique with its own brand of "specialness". we'll be dropping many models next year and the "R" probably won't show up again for a while.

We would make a special "R" blade model for a customer if it was desiged, but the high price scares most potential customers away.
