I know the Fiskars/Gerbers get alotta love but it seems like the buck axes dont get any mention is there a reason for that.

I have never tried the Buck axes for two reasons. 1) I used to be able to get Fiskars hatchets locally at Menard's for $15 (sometimes $10 on sale). 2) I rarely use axes anymore.

I have a small one and it is very sharp. I think it is 10 or 12", and I have used it a bit, not alot. Mostly for knidling prep. It does a find job, but I have never put it to alot of stress.

Also, never having used such a small hatchet, it really is quite dangerous. You really have to watch such a short handle.

Doc is right. Shorter hatchets and such need extra care when using. The Buck I have is ok for small splitting, but the handle will flex pretty easy when twisting your wrist to do a split. Hasn't broken, even though I'm tough on it. Bevels are way too wide for such a small hatchet ,IMO. My 13" Wetterlings ( approx. same size) outperforms it in any aspect of woods use. I'd advise getting something like that instead if you want a better bush tool. The 19" small forest axe ( Wetterlings or Gransfors Bruks) is even a better bet ,for slightly longer length, and more versatility.

i haven't seen one in person, but it looks like it's intended to compete with the head to head with the Gerber/Fiskars.

i expect it's produced to meet a price point, not a quality standard.

i used to think the Gerber/Fiskars were cool, but after examining them, the edges seemed fairly blunt.

if you want something to keep in the truck or trunk, i'd consider an all steel Estwing. for use where it will get more maintenance and not be subjected to temp extremes, i'd want one of the better forged axes with a wood haft.

I own neither. I am a 'hawk guy.

The Fiskers, as I recall, has the handle flaring out around the head. That's bad for business, IMO. It looks like the Buck's handle is flush to the head. It also has a !!talon hole!! at the front of the handle!!!

Seriously though, I like that feature. It's enough to make me choose the Buck, everything else being equal.
