Hi, all.
To date, mine is roughly $125. Currently, I am carrying on and off a SOG Vision (with the clip removed), and a CS Large Voyager Clip point, and a peck folder..... and a small victorinox (it's got a pen in it... cool). And that's it.
Although, if it made me happy I would probably go 150, but I (probably like yourself) almost always pay at least 10% off MSRP.

Until recently it was the 150 $ Starmate.

but now I sometime take my new 425 $ decorated Sebenza for a walk...

My $500 Terzuola ATCF with Ironwood scales and titanium bolsters. There was a time when I wouldnt use a knife over $100 but this knife and my old JW Smith model 1 folder were meant to be used.

My sebenza gets used and used hard every day. NO prying or anything doopey like that but cuts carpet, cardboard and anything else I think a knife should be able to cut reasonably. A few scratches .. ah just gives it charachter.

Hm....

Limitless? right now my Benchmade costum bali-song at $450, the most expensive knife i own.
But some knives just beg's to be carriedand used!
I wouldn't hestitate to carry/use more expensive knives, i try to buy knives as users.
Of course this may change!

The most I ever spent on one knife that I am using is the Mission MPF-Ti. I think it was around $400.00 tax included when I got mine back in August of 98' while vacationing in Sunny California for my first time.
But, I did buy 2 of these at the same time, the other one is in my knife collection!
THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MY MOST EXPENSIVE KNIFE PURCHASE!

Small Sebenza - $290. This is the perfect size for my purposes and it is a joy to use. If I had a decorated or wood inlay version, I wouldn't hesitate to use it (except for a gold coin version which I would probably be hesitant to use on a daily basis.)

Right now it is a small wood inlay Sebenza, though I must admit to not cutting roots or wire with it....yet.

My everyday carry knives are a small sebenza and a Hartsfield keychain knife at about $400. But when I go hiking, I carry my Ed Fowler bowie ($1450). The handle fits my hand like nothing else. I must admit, the first time I hacked firewood with it I felt a little funny, but what's the fun of owning beautiful blades if you can't use at least some of the really nice ones.

I use to carry a small decorated Sebenza. Last year it fell out of my pocket in a parking lot (I found it 10 minutes later)and I now carry a CRKT P.E.C.K. I use to own a 14" damascus (2000+ layers) camp knife made by Carmon (Durrell Carmon Johnson). The person that I got the knife from and Durrell himself confirmed that the camp knife ($2500 in 1990) was used to chop trees near Carmon's shop in North Florida. If I need to chop trees, I use an ax.

Well, I'll be honest and break the mold here

. I will only put a cheep ugly knife to hard use! As long as it's safe and sharp enough to perform the task at hand of course.

Why, you ask? I hardly ever run into a situation where a knife could be put to hard use and another tool wouldn't do the job better (ie: digging a hole, prying the lid off of a paint can, hacking through a tree downed across the road, etc.), obviously a shovel, screwdriver, or chainsaw would do the job better. So I mostly just carry my knives around and look at them and show them to other people because I enjoy them. Of course, if a real emmergency ever arose, I wouldn't hesitate to put on of my knives to an arduous task such as making a crashed van into a convertible

.

Essentially you could say that I'm just VERY particular regarding what chores are suitable for knives.

In that light, I will use basically any knife under $100 for tasks "suitable for knives".

Stompy,

I agree with your train of thought.I will only use my cheaper knives such as the Impulse and my CRKT M-16.I carry mostly knives that I enjoy having with me to flick and show to friends.Like yourself though, I would use any of my knives if the right situation arose,(for utility or otherwise).

$75-$100 more or less

Okay, guys, let's take that line of reasoning one step further. I definetly agree with you on "the right knife for the job".
*** But when have you guys ever been in a situation that a folder, that costs more that $150, was actually **required**. (let me also say that I mean real bucks, not manufacter's price)

The most expensive knife I will use is whatever one I happen to have, currently it is not a knife that I own but one that I have been loaned by Will York. It is a custom blade (Cobalt alloy) *forged* by Steve Schwarzer and finished by Kit Carson. It is one of a kind, and even says so on the blade (01 of 01).

edrozen,
Of course the arguement can be made that a cheap knife will usually do the job just as well as a more expensive one, but that same arguement could apply to cars or anything else. Sure, no one really needs to drive a Porsche (insert car or knife of your choice) but it sure is enjoyable to do so.

I tried setting a limit. It didn't work.

You try letting a Talonite Wegner-Simonich fixed blade Pro-Hunter sit idle!

today it's a lg. dec. benza, a MT CT II, and a mini socom.individually: 425,440,100.so i guess the limit depends on whether you count collectively or not.
