What's your favorite Fiddleback for field dressing whitetail? I am trying to decide what to get, I have a hiking buddy which seems like it would definitely work fine but I am wondering what everyone else likes.

KPH, Recluse and ladyfinger
Dad skinned out 4 whitetails with his KPH and recluse
I personally love the recluse and ladyfinger using both for game.
Best wishes
Mac

Field dressing is easy. Almost any knife will do. I've used the Terrasuar, Recluse, Bushfinger, and Patch knives. So far, my favorite is the Patch. Just enough blade and a full sized handle. Makes a great debone knife too! :)

Never done a whitetail, but pronghorn and mule deer are close enough. :D

I've used my Ladyfinger and Maverick so far. I was pretty impressed with the Maverick! Should have my review up on Fiddleback Outpost sometime soon. My Ladyfinger impresses me everytime I take it out of the sheath so that's sort of an unfair comparison. I also have used the F2 for plenty of small game and foraging, it's excellent at both and would do equally well with big game. I've also been testing a Wingman and feel the same way. I agree with others on the Recluse and Patch as well. I'll be putting a Bushfinger to the test this year, but I'm sure it will do great.

Lots of options! Of the options I listed, if you want a knife strictly for field dressing big game I would go with the Maverick or Wingman, they have trailing points and a ton of belly which is awesome for skinning and deboning. Also they're both from Andy's "super comfortable, egonomic handle line up" so they're very comfortable for extended use. The looks took some getting used to for me but I've been really impressed.

If you want an all arounder I would go with a Bushfinger, Ladyfinger, or Recluse.

If you want something to EDC and use on small game and big game, I would suggest the F2, Wingman, or Patch.

Hope that helps! Here are some pictures.

Thanks for all your input guys. I'm leaning towards a bushfinger or ladyfinger.

That's a great direction to lean. If we were all limited to only owning one Fiddleback (gasp!) I bet a majority of people would land on one of those two models.

My Bushcrafters have served me well with the Sitka blacktail at home, either in saber grind and even in scandi. Very comfortable handle, nice belly and drop point.

I have been looking forward to doing the same with a smaller Fiddleback like a Patch Kinfe or a Hiking Buddy or a Minimuk.

If I could have actually gotten that damn monster whitetail that I spent 18 days - yes, I said 18 - tracking and hunting, only to be outsmarted on every turn by the beast, I would be able to contribute to this thread from a place of knowledge instead of speculation.

Odaon, I don't even want to talk to you. I'm boycotting your Instagram pics tonight too. Dammit.

Haha!! Maybe that buck will give you another chance this year. We're just gearing up for another awesome hunting year out here! Getting excited for turkeys and morels!

He walked within 60 yards of you 4 times but you were too busy taking pictures of knives to notice. They were great pics though.

I'm ignoring the comment about next year...along with turkeys and morels. Ignoring it. But I'll talk to Nathan! He probably did...walk right by me. I love my knife pictures! Hahahahahaha!

I'm hunting a tiny piece of property, so I've got to catch him when he crosses it - and I'm telling ya, it would only take a minute or two. My game cams would always catch him about an hour after dark. Now if I could just get my tree-hugging, hunting hating, gun despising, wildlife refuge sign hanging neighbors to let me hunt their land - his bedding area - I'd get him when he just starts moving before dark.

Or...Odaon could just invite me to come hunt with him.

That sounds like a smart buck! Picked out the property where he's safe! Those big boys make mistakes every once in a while.

Come on out! I'm always happy to have more hunting buddies! Fair warning though, we kick some mountain butt when we're hunting. Several miles a day over some rough terrain. :D I guess you could always come help with a management hunt as well...

wow. the ladyfinger and the f2 are on my list (shortlist for the f2), but i love osage and the maroon micarta is just about perfect. nice knives.

EDIT: oh and sorry. i got distracted. to the OP, i think schmittie is right.... any sharp knife that you can control inside the deer will do just fine. with that said, i do not have any actual fiddleback experience. like someone else said, i am looking forward to trying out the hiking buddy this year.

Thanks!! If I had to choose between those two it would be real real tough. Luckily I don't have to!! The F2 is the knife I consider my first Fiddleback, though I owned a Patch for a short time before it. The F2 came from a Friday, the real Fiddleback buying experience! I'm also a fan of the Maroon over white and natural, and it's CPM154 to boot! :D

Fiddleback Outpost is going to releasing a few F2's at some point in the next 7 days. Some good looking ones in this batch.

Haha! Well, the F2s didn't drop tonight so you've got at least until tomorrow. :D The brown canvas over natural and yellow would be my choice of the three they're dropping!

I agree. I've used a Nessmuk, Patch, F2, and a Wingman. All performed very well. Always wanted to try a KPH but I've never been able to catch that special one. I EDC a Patch and it works the best for me as an all-round knife of those listed. For a skinning specific knife, the Wingman has a lot of desirable features. Here's a review on the qualities of the Wingman and there is specific skinning info on page 2: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1370769-Wingman-Review-and-Roadtrip/page2
