What's your favorite piston driven .308/7.62?

Hey all, Just sold my son my M1a Loaded because I didn't like how expensive it was to put optics on it (plus he was drooling all over it ; ). My original idea was to replace it with a Scout model, but then I saw the new Ruger SR 762. Got down to the nearest Turner's and they both felt pretty good. Good and bad reviews on both of them, especially in regards to the accuracy of the Scout. My current optics are an old Eotech and the 3x magnifier, so I'd love to be able to mount them both. Looks like the Scout won't accommodate the magnifier, but that's not necessarily a deal breaker.

Love to hear from someone who has, or has had both, but open to hearing about anything that's a piston-driven .308 (I hope to never have to clean another DI gun again!) Under $2k please. TIA, Mike

Just going by what I've read, the FALs aren't as accurate as I would like- or at least not as accurate as the AR platform rifles. The SCAR I believe is out of my price range, but thanks for the recommendations. I thought there would be more options and responses. I should also mention that I'm in California : (

I like my POF P308, at the moment I have a 20" Gen 3 and have a 5.5-22x56 Nightforce NXS on it. Unfortunately I've only shot it about 3 times in the year I've had it set up so thinking about selling it to fund a 16" Gen 4 P308 since I'd shoot a carbine more. I've also seen/shot a Gen 4 P308 that had 2000 rounds of steel cased Tula put through it in 1 afternoon with 0 stoppages.

LMT makes a nice 308 AR, same with Primary Weapon Systems.

Since you mention you're in California......ehhhh. I know LMT makes a compliant rifle, not sure about PWS. POF at one time did a compliant P308 just not sure if they still do

He said under $2,000, not $20,000. :p nice rifles

Ha.....yeah.....missed that part.

Still probably be able to find a used Gen 3 P308 compliant for under 2k

Not too many options for a new 308 piston AR for under $2k. Ruger wins in that regards, I've handled a few of them, never shot one, but they just never impressed me. If I had to stay under $2k for a piston (besides a used P308 or PWS) I'd look for a Sig 716 (new Gen 2 looks bad ass)

As for cleaning, piston is nice but really if you're running good lube an AR will go thousands of rounds without cleaning. I've done it, still doing it, shoot until it won't run. Slip 2000 EWL and I don't worry about it. Although the 8.5" suppressed 300blk is getting disgusting :)

While not a 7.62x51/.308 rifle, LWRC Six8's can be had for ~$1500 plus tax in Texas. The 6.8SPC with a SPCII or similar chamber works well for the ranges most people shoot. You also have the benefit of less weight and bulk in general to lug around. While I like my other rifles, if I'm smacking feral hogs these days, it's going to be a 6.8SPC AR-15 variant. Plus, at $10 a box for Federal Gold Dots, it's cheaper then using hog ready .223 or even milspec 7.62x51.

Regarding the SIG, I find the balance and ergonomics to be a problem. My dealer had a Sig 556 pistol SBR'rd and it was damn near impossible to hold on to with just the pistol grip (slick and shaped to allow it to rotate out of your hand, definitely not a one hand "rifle"). The Ruger piston rifles I have held didn't balance well for me, way too front heavy, YMMV.

Thanks guys. M67, I'm definitely wishing I lived at your house! I'll be buying everything POF right after I hit the lottery. Love their stuff and wanted it since I first learned about it. I saw the SIG and I'll probably take another look at it before deciding. Maybe I'll check out a few DIs too. Any suggestions in that direction?

I'd see if you could find a deal on a Black Rain for a DI 308. A friend of mine has had great luck with his CMMG MK3. I've handled a few of the lightweight Windham 308s before too with the MI SSK forearm, seemed slick. But really for a DI 308, personally I'd build one. I'm picky on ARs and what I like in them is hard to find on a sub 2K factory DI gun

Plus you needing a compliant rifle it would be easier to build one then find one you'd like (I'd think)

Tried to go to a couple gun shops today, first one had nothing under $3k in a piston and even their DIs were over $2k. Second one was out of business : ( The Ruger keeps looking better and better.

Did get to handle some fine guns, though! - and some that were hard to tell what they were charging so much for.
