This is just a question to find out from you more learned folks what you think is the best steel for a blade to be made of. If at all possible, please tell me what the pros and cons are for your favorite.

RWL-34
it is powdersteel with very fine grainstructure. It take a very keen edge and holds it for a long time. it´s great. If you are into mirrorfinish ( I am not) this is one of the best they say.

ATS-34 for hunters, flexes and holds good edge
440-c hunters and kitchen, polishes mirror, wont rust, holds ok edge
CPM-3v Camp and rough duty, chopping, takes abuse, holds edge, flexes
5160 for bowies and chopping, forges good holds edge, passes ABS abuse test,
52100, unique if forged from ball bearings, excellent edge holding, tricky to heat-treat
1084 for small using knives. good temper lines.
1084/15n20 for damascus, both are carbon steels and have good contrasting colors.
1084/pure nickel for mosaic damascus, looks good! Gun blues beautiful.
I forgot CPM 440V best edge holding for hunters in my opinion. All the CPM steels are great! Bruce

Thanks Guys!
I'm looking into getting into knife forging, and I want to start building up a knowledge base for when I actually get the time to learn how to forge, so please, keep the responses coming. I also have an interest in collecting knives, but I feel that the knife is a tool that is meant to be used. No sense in making or buying a pretty knife that won't hold an edge. Can you get company manufactured knives that are made out of all of the different kinds of steel that Bruce was kind enough to relate to me?

ATS-34: Lots of companies, including Benchmade, Gerber, etc.
440-C:Again, quite a few companies use this.
CPM-3V:I don't think anybody uses this in factory knife production.
5160:Marbles
52100:Marbles
1084:Running Dog Knife Company
CPM440V:Spyderco, Kershaw

Most mass-produced knives are not made out of damascus; AG Russell has some but I'm not sure the type.
