What's your home interior decor style?....

I'll first explain how this question came up.
The other day my wife had one of her co-worker friends come over for a visit, bringing along her husband. Though I had previously met them both, this was their first time over to our home. Shortly after enviting them in, my wife's friend asks the following.... "I love your interior, what style of home decor is this considered?". We had no easy answer to give her.

We have what I describe to be an "eclectic" form, having too many things going on to allow us to label it with any one style. Even so, I also told her that we probably borrow most from the Victorian decor. Though we do not incorporate all the embellishments found in full blown Victorian decoration, we do have enough elements of it to consider it the styling closest to what we have. We use floral patterns, tassels, fringes, pillows, and other elements of the Victorian style. The main thing we borrow is the "more is more idea", rather than today's more commonly found "less is more" decorating.

Here is a snap-shot of our living room:

This conversation with this young lady is what gave me the idea to ask you here about your personal tastes in interior home decor.
I remember that in a recent thread concerning hand made rugs, one of the fellow members here shared a couple snapshots of his own rugs. His pictures not only showed his beautiful rugs, but also the "beautiful" styling of his den.

For those of you that have a digital camera handy, and that would not mind sharing such a photo, could you share your personal interior styling with us?
It just seems like it would be a fun and interesting thing to see :)

"Eclectic" would be a kind description of our surroundings. "Contemporary Clutter" would be more accurate.

heres a snap shot of mine... i live in a 1bdrm apt. in the bay area, CA :barf:

EDIT: everyone always ask... if thats the living room where is the couch and tv? well the couch is directly behind me and the big screen is to the right of the couch.

Early Mayhem .

Lots of books , plants , an aquarium , lots and lots of arrow wood , bow staves , a few paintings on the walls and very little else .

Well I would have said eclectic, but its so vastly different from you're eclectic JJ that I think this question is just over my head. My wife could answer this much better than I. We haven't gone for any one style though. I'd say our bedroom is Mediteranean/Greek. (My wife is Greek.) The living room, compared to you'rs I'd call contemporary, though none of the furniture is contemporary style. I like dark hardwoods, and the couches and recliner are leather.

Thanks for sharing, that is definitely a unique living room area.
I enjoy seeing interior decorating that truly reflects the person(s) interests :)

Mostly a rather spartan version of Victorian. The house is from about 1850, and we've tried to do the rest to match. But we have less intentional clutter than the Victorians went for - I like more open space, fewer things with fringes etc.

"Contemporary cheap/awful" though, for the furniture we've yet to be able to afford to replace.

Today, Post-Flood Gulf Coast.

Nice. New walls, roof, etc. Things everyone else has all the time.

back then, Early American Psychotic.

I got rid of the snakes, axes, skulls and other non-PC artwork when I met wife. Never did get the electric chair (replica) for the livingroom. Wooden crates for a wall unit... Of course, single-guy plastic milk crates for the rest.

The coffee table had 2 ball pythons in it. Had no bed for months (and plastic lawn furniture) after some girl moved out (took everything)... Nazi helmets, swords... brewed my own beer... hope I am never single again.

Thanks for sharing, guys :)

Our biggest hurdle may have been melding my wife's likings with my own. We do have a few common interests, but mostly they are not on par with each other's. Early in our relationship we had certain areas that we would be responsible for. I would decorate the living room using my tastes, she would decorate the dining room area in her's, etc. This worked fine for a while, until we both realized how bad the transition from room to room was. This is when we decided to start borrowing from the Victorian principle, where more is more and where just about anything will go, as long as one puts a little thought in the melding.

Here's a corner of the living room showing an example of how my masculine items are placed right alongside her feminine ones. A little bit of her, a little bit of me, and somehow it works for both of us:

The living room probably leans a little bit more towards my taste, where as the dining room leans slightly towards her's.
Here is an example in the dining room where my wife's items dominate, but I still managed to squeeze a bit of my likings in as well, (a cabinet full of my wife's china, but "my" tankards placed on top of that cabinet) ;)

I guess it's not for everyone, but it definitely works for us and is what makes it our own ;)

Can't wait to see more of your photos :)

Interior decor styles? Don't even know what that means. :D

I live in a Vermont Farmhouse, so I guess my style would be "inside Vermont Farmhouse" style with a helping of books and papers stacked everywhere.

Upstairs? Tweaker pad. There's a couch, and a chair, and a coffee table with nothing on it. There's a glass sort of dining room table with two chairs remaining, one of which occasionally dumps users onto the floor. It doesn't really look lived-in because it's not.

My room(s)? Too much stuff. Too many books. A workbench with too much crap on it. Sharp things hanging all over the damned place. I don't know what visitors think of it as I never ask, but I'm assuming that the ones that don't return are freaked out by it. Their loss.

I'm not one for decoration. I spend far more time out of my home than in it. It's a dry place that holds my stuff and most of my mail goes to. I've been here longer than anywhere but I'm reluctant to settle down in a place that's not mine.

The "dumping on the floor" comment had me rolling :)

I can relate to your comment about the pointy things on the wall. I know that some folks seem to like it, usually being the guy visitors, where as the girls seem to not like it much at all. Don't know how many times I've heard people say...... "I'd be scared to have those things in my home".
I've been known to respond by saying.......... "Why, do you fear that they will jump from their places and attack you?"............ LOL! ;)

I've started trying to leave a rig out on our end table. Its always one of my nicest. (The samsher.) My wife always puts it away, or asks me to do it. C'est la vie. She's worth it.

Ours is in an Old Folks Messy Ndn Style. Around my computer desk there is an assembled cacophony of kukri and other knives along with a few boxes of ammo and a couple of pistols and a few reference books.
On the walls are an assortment of ndn pictures along with a painted buffalo and painted bear skull. There is a painted ceremonial drum on one wall with the prints by Enoch Kelly Haney one of our Oklahoma senators. Our furniture is Early American to Contemporary to Modern.
Our house is also open between the dining area and the kitchen so everything sort of runs together.
Almost everyone that comes here says our home looks like a museum.;) :D :p

Can you share some photos?.... I'd love to see your Native American Museum :)

Here's a wall in our living room that I've squeezed out any chance for my wife to add something feminine to it ;)

Most of my interior decor style is based around the goal of having as little furniture as possible. I've moved 12 times since 1994 and have developed a keen hatred of dressers, couches, bedframes, mattresses, etc.. I've got 2 overstuffed bookshelves, a futon, a few low tables, & some zabuton (floor cushions). I use hanging canvas shelves instead of dressers and keep all my CDs in a couple of huge CD binders. I come from a packrat family that never throws ANYTHING out so it's a constant struggle to keep the belongings down to a manageable level (I still have waaaay too much random crap), but it'll be worth it when I have to move, AGAIN, and don't have to figure out how to get a couch up 3 flights of stairs, AGAIN.

Jimmy it appears that your wife collects Fenton Glasswear? I was once a big fan of Fenton but then got into the Imperial Glasswear.
After that I started collecting Amberina and have a very nice collection of it in a couple of brands and still have a bit of Imperial Glass.
One of our daughters was sending me the Budweiser Christmas Beer Stein every year and I had to ask her too stop because we had run out of room to put them.:(
Cindy was also sending Barbie the Avon Christmas Plate every year and Barbie had to ask her to stop that for the same reason.
Our house is way too small for the amount of things we have in it.
