What's your ideal hunting folder?

I was interested to hear from others about what their perfect folding hunting knife would be. Would it be a classic like the Buck 110 or a multiblade folder or even one of the high tech jobs like the Spyderco Impala? Any thoughts/opinions appreciated.

For hunting I prefer a fixed blade. There is no chance of it closing on you while working blind (inside a rib cage). You also don't have to worry about the inside getting all gunked up. If I were to use a folder, I would go with something that could be taken apart for cleaning.

I agree on fixed blades, but I like my Buck Goliath if Ihad to take a folder

I'd prefer a fixed blade as well, but since I don't hunt my major outdoor uses are just camping and backpacking uses, so my Buck 110 fills the bill. I tend to use more classic style knives (including SAKS) for outdoor uses and one handers for urban uses (expect for fishing, I NEED a one hander and a multi-tool there).

well i prefer my buck bowie fixed blade for hunting purposes, i've never used a folder for that type of thing cause frankly a bowie fixed blade offers more than a folder can in that situation. but if i had to use a folder i'd want a good blade lock system on it, maybe the CRKT bladelock 2 plain edge :p.

That looks like a bloody good knife there shootist. I'm more inclined to thumbstud than hole and Axis over liner, but even so...

Thanks for putting that up.

Well, since a couple others mentioned it, I would go with a Sebenza for a folder too. My first choice is still, and always will be a fixed blade.

Have used Remington folders for years, on many a deer and elk. Handy having the saw blade! But for sheer lockup strength, you can not beat a SOG Tomcat for deer dressing work.

Fixed blades are the ticket for skinning and quartering chores!

I assume we're staying in the realm of production folders, so:
1. Sebenza
2. Blade-Tech Wegner
3. Spyderco Wegner
4. Gerber ATS-34 Gator drop point
(The Buck Mayo looks good too, but I have no experience with it.)
I carry a folder as back-up for my fixed blade Denning hunters, but I sure prefer fixed over folder for dressing out if I have a choice.

Foe me ,in folders, there are 3 knives that I find
to be well worth carring on a hunt.

1. Buck 110 (Schrade Lb7) in a lockback
2. Buck 317 (or Case) classic 2 bld hunter
3. Schrade 125OT Mustang carbon steel hunter

All of these knives will cut with the best present
day hunting knife available. Other than these I
too would take a fixed blade.

Yes, I suppose I'm old fashioned but I've yet to
see a "newer" design that is "measureably better"
at the age old task of carving up a fresh kill.

I switched from a folder to a fixed blade years ago, but have started to bowhunt and will be using a folder again (I'd hate to fall out of a treestand at all, but I might hate it more wearing a fixed blade knife.)

My favorite was a plain ol' Schrade LB7. Big, easy to hold and very sturdy. Now-a-days, I'd go for a folder with better steel and a grippier grip -- the ATS-34 Gerber Gator or something like that. I love the LB7 though. (I have a pair of them, but one has a broken tip. :-( I can't remember what stupid thing I did to break it....)

Good hunting,
Bob
