which steel do you prefer in your knives for both sharpness and long lasting edge sharpened to 15 DPS v grind, up to 6k waterstone.
Im looking into super steels and the two that I saw with good potential are k390 rc 67 and m4 that could possibly be slightly above the others, in edge holding the steel out beat others by 3-4 times. My other option is blue steel, I don't know how well it can compete with k390 or m4 in edge lasting, but from what I take in it can be sharper than k390? I don't know how true that is..

If you owned knifes in blue steel, k390, m4 which do you recommend, taken in account the proper sharpening media, proper sharpening technique and proper heat treatment. Any others that are within the top 3 of your personal list?

I have a Gayle Bradley spyderco in m4 and I love the steel so much that I bought a fixed blade in it. In my experience with it you can sharpen to a very fine edge and even with everything that I have cut with it I still haven't "had" to sharpen it. I don't have any experience with the other steels that you mentioned, but another thing about m4 is that it is one of the toughest steels out there so if you intend to beat on it a lot it is tough to beat m4 in my opinion.

I honestly think that K390, in perticular of the ones you have listed, is a little too impractical to get a hold of, and a little too prone to corrosion, for my personal tastes. Sure, it holds an edge insanely well, but it also is a pain in the but to sharpen, no matter how you sharpen it, and it is not very good at resisting chipping at that insane hardness, though still better than many other steels at that hardness. Although, neither is M4 when taken to the knid of hardness you are talking about, only M4 will also corrode more easily on you as well.

I would say that the highest I would ever really want to go for practical edge retention would be S125V. Will perform very well in edge retention, while still maintaining toughness better than M4 or K390, and being stainless. It will not reach as high of a level of hardness, ut it haturally has insanely high wear resistance, making it's edge retention unparalleled in stainless steels.
Not to mention that S125V can be had in a production knife right now. Fantoni made a KnifeArt exclusive version of their folder that has S125V steel for the blade. Costs very nearly double what the regular version of the same knife does, but that's just what it costs to be able to machine steel like S125V.

Oh, and S10V is also a consideration, though not stainless again.

And just saying, if you are doing your edge freehand on waterstones, there is no way they will end up being a true V-ground bevel. Just not something that a person can do really.
