Im curious what people prefer for their griptilian steel. The more i research the more it seems like people get better results from 154cm or M4. I was under the impression S30V was the most popular when I purchased my Ritter, but I seem to read more about that steel either chipping or not holding an edge. I also read that could just be the old heat treat which im still confused about how that works. I don't find very many positive opinions on D2.

So just thought id throw the question out there for anyone that wouldn't mind sharing their opinions. Thanks

Doesnt matter to me, as they perform equally in normal (i.e. non youtube) usage.

Of the steels Benchmade offers I prefer 154cm for my edc. Wish theyd give cpm154 a go, I'd like to try that out.

Not that there's a wrong choice in any of the Grip's steel choices, but Benchmade's HT of 154CM is spot on and I've always found it a joy to use in heavily used/carried BM EDC folders. I have found in day-to-day use to hold a very good working edge for an entire day or two of heavy use and is easily restored to shaving sharpness with almost any method/stone, and is reasonably priced in Griptilian's.

Thank you everyone who responded so far. I love the blade shape and finish of my Ritter. I also have a full size 551 in 154cm and a mini 555 sheepsfoot. Im experimenting with all of them but would like to commit to one to make my main edc. I think an m4 would be great tho based on all I've read. When were Ritters offered in m4?

I've only got a mini in 154cm, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it performs. It's also extremely easy for me to get back to hair whittling.

154cm for everyday use. Takes a keen edge and can be touched up in seconds on a pocket stone either at work or in the field.

This could make for a laugh, but im apparently still so new to knives that I didn't even realize there was a difference between 154cm and cpm-154. I got a lot more resesrch to do haha

I'm currently debating the same question; I'm going to get a new full size Grip and I'm not sure if I should go with 154cm or S30V.

My only experience with Benchmade's S30V was with a Ritter Grip when they first came out - it chipped like crazy! (I really wanted to like the Ritter, too) On the other hand, I've had great experience with Benchmade's 154cm.

Anyone have recent experience with BM's S30V?
