What's Your Type?

When I was a younger man I found myself involved, over the years, with a number of different girls. I didn't really know my "type" or what I was looking for. Eventually, I met a woman who was just my type and now she's my wife (cute story, huh?).

Anyway, I've had a similar experience lately with knives. Since joining this forum I have (surprise surprise) started buying way more knives, but it's taken me some time to figure out my knife "type". My ZT 0566 is a big favorite so I thought "maybe I'm into flippers". Ordered another, slimmer flipper and then realized that I wasn't quite into it.

Anyway, what I've come to realize is that what I really am looking for is something reliable, well built and ready to take on anything. THAT is my type. Since this realization my quest for knives has changed and I'm a little more specific in what I look for and what characteristics a knife has to have in order to be added to my rather discriminating collection.

So, what's your "type"? What do you look for in a knife wife? What features/steels/characteristics make you want to say "I do"?

After three years of handling literally hundreds of knives, I can honestly tell you:

I have no freaking idea.

I'm a bit of a fluzzee when it comes to the knives I make and use. I stay loyal to my wife,:) Knives? No way!:D

I have knives that I know will just work. That doesn't keep me from trying others though. I like finding quirks in different knives. I feel it gives me more skill.

For a practical edc folder i know what i like, as far as knives in general , its kinda whatever catches my eye.

For edc folder i tend to gravitate towards no more than 5 oz, reasonable slim as to be forgettable unless i need it, thinner grinds for slicin!.. and reasonably covert colors/pocket clip.

Folders with a blade length greater than 4.5" but less than 6.5" with either a thick framelock or TriAd lock and must be capable of the Emerson wave opening.

I like my Knives like I like my women;
(Back In my single days of course ;) )

All different shapes, sizes, colors, and ethnicity's...
I don't like 'em too fat, or too skinny, but so long as they're attractive in their own right, and working with what they're working with, I tend not to discriminate much...

And if I like 'em a lot, and we have a great time together, I'll call on 'em again (and again and again)... If not, and it turns out it's just a one night stand, then I'll stick 'em aside and forget about 'em until a lonely night when my regulars don't come through for whatever the reason, or if I just get bored...
(And if a better suitor comes along who can truly appreciate them for what they are more then I, I'm not the jealous type, I have no problem letting them go).

My "favorites" however (folders) tend to rest between 3-4", have satin-mirror polishes, sexy curves and sleak lines, and while natural wood certainly catches my eye, textured g10 has its own appeal, and while sometime I even like a little rubber, other times I like 'em raw (metal).

And while I try to always play safe, sometimes I just like to live on the "edge"...
But let it be noted, even when we get a little crazy, or even if they're not quite working out, and i'm planning on letting 'em go, I always treat 'em with the proper respect they deserve. My momma raised me better then to be abusive in my relationships.

So while I found me a good woman to hold me down, I'm still a total slut, uncommitted and playing the field when it comes to my blades...

My primary EDC has to be more than just a knife, hence I carry a SAK. I've recently started carrying a one hand knife, the Buck Spitfire, just to see how handy it is.
I guess now I am a 2 knife guy, because having that knife clipped on my pocket, so easy to grab and open with one hand is nice. Unfortunatly it doesn't have a bottle opener or screwdriver or tweezers and such. Anyone who carries a knife will eventually try to use it as a screwdriver, to me personally it just makes no sense to carry a pocket knife without extra utility blades. I know I'm in the minority but until a fine canoe with one spear blade and one combination screwdriver bottle opener comes out the world will continue to be out of balance.

Low maintenance, non threatening, easy on the eyes and it has to be simple in build.

A nice sexy and slim profile, great feel in hand, fun to play with, takes a beating well, and isn't too slippery when wet.

But knives, on the other hand... :D;):p

Had to re read that after I finished reading the last line.

You sly dog you.

My "type" of knife is usually the one I've most recently purchased ;)

There are lots of ex-knives in my house!

After brief flirtation with modern designs, I find I'm solidly in the traditional.

Favorite folders — Vic Classic and a 4-blade camper/scout knife (currently a wartime Camillus Army Engineer's knife). Others get carried from time to time, especially Canoe-patterns which always make me smile, but the Vic and camper are pretty much everyday items. They're just so useful on a day-in, day-out basis, it's hard to envision what would displace them. I like the various styles and sizes of Stockmans and locking folders, but they are simply not as routinely handy, even when paired up with the Classic.

Favorite fixed — no single favorite dominates, but these are all onboard, one time or another: Cattaraugus 225Q, Condor Kephart, Kauhavanpuukkopaja leather handle puukko, Ontario Jet Pilot Knife, Mora MG, Mora 2000, Green River, River Traders Coureur de bois, and others.

Interesting. Looking back over the 63 years that I've carried and used knives (I'm 68 now), I do find that the vast majority of the ones that I've carried and used regularly (not just for a short time, then gone) fall into a fairly narrow category. I like folders and fixed blades that are smaller knives so they're easy to manipulate for closer detailed work. I like knives with a bit of heft to them and with thicker handles. I like steels that are "tried-and-true" instead of "latest and greatest". I value toughness and all 'round capabilities over how pretty it is or how long it'll hold an edge. I have no lock style preference as long as it's well done. I prefer non-metallic handles (including no titanium) and man-made materials (G10, FRN, micarta, etc.). I do seem to prefer modern locking folders even though I started with slipjoints many years ago.

The knives that have stayed with me through the years or have come lately to stay are ones like Buck's 110 & 112; BM's 525, 585, Volli; Spyderco PM 1 & 2; Emerson CQC7A's, mini-CQC15, micro & mini-Commanders; Dozier Arkansas Traveler & Straight Personal... This is not a complete list but it shows the size, blade shape, and materials that I lean toward.

I have had many different types, and while I lean toward simple almost minimalistic designs thats about as close to a type as it gets. Its kinda like asking what type of movies you like.

They all have a purpose, and if they play their role and excell in what they're intended to do, it's worth trying out. In the end, we're all knife nuts up here on BF...!
