I,m just starting out and don,t have much funds . I know I can scare up a wheel rim easy enough .I already have a propane tank . I once heard of plans for a wheel rim forge . Does anybody know what else I,d need or where I can get a copy of those plans ?

Kevin or should I call you Mr The GREY.

I have only ever heard of the wheel rim or break drum forges using Charcoal and blown air. The propane forges tend to be enclosed systems using regulators KO wool and tend to be a couple hundred dollars if you buy new parts.

Check out Ron REIL's site and or look up forges. there are quite a few gas designs. The carcoal I used for a few years. I used the round plough disk and a hand wind blower.

Also look up some of the one brick forges and small brick forges see what fits the buget and se if you like it before spending a heeap of cash.

Hope you like it have fun.

Thanks Reg , you can just call me Kevin . I would actually prefer charcoal . I,m looking at portability and cleanliness and I don,t see a charcoal forge as being clean if you have to transport it . I also thought it would be easy enough to attach some legs to a rim or a brake drum .

i just built one from a brake drum off an international truck, if you can get a truck drum their nice and big and beefy.
if your wanting to go with propane theres several designs on the web that you can choose from. i'll be doing one with brick because i can get it near by, but theres some beautiful designs using refractory cement and a piece of pipe as a housing that i really admire.

Kevin Charcoal can be messy but not so dad that it can't be cleaned up in a few minutes. The main problem with portable is cool down time after a session. If cold you can just wrap it in a tarp or bag of some kind. If it is hot
more ploblems. That goes for gas also. You will get varieing amounts of sparks comming out the top depending on a lot of variables the type of wood the charcol is made from can also make it burn with more sparks. Or at least it seams like it to me. A good hard wind on the air blower can get hot sinders falling all overyou also. You can learn to control it. On my plow disc model I have a 50mm pipe stuck into the ground for my yard forge and a four removable legs for the portable. If you want to send me an email at reg_ellery@optusnet.com.au I can send you a picture of the 2 set ups I don't have plands but it is easy to see from the photos. I had a blower and just made the rest up as I went based on the original cast model. Mine was a few scraps of waterpipe and angle iron that I scrounged.
But blade forum in the subject so I know it is not a spam message. I delete what I don't recognize. I have been burnt with viruses.
