I hope it isn't inappropriate to post this here, but knowing how many people have benefited from it over the years, I just though I'd let everybody here in Shop Talk know that since Photobucket has apparently increased their yearly membership price (once again) to $400, the incredibly helpful and detailed work in progress thread by Nick Wheeler and Lorien will be losing it's images at the end of this year when it takes effect.

Lorien is the one who has been hosting all those pictures and he just let us know over in the C&H sub-forum that he won't be renewing his membership at Photobucket come the new year, and I definitely don't blame him as it's a complete and utter rip off.

Anyway, I just thought a number of you here would be interested know this so that if you want to, you still have time to go and save that WIP to keep with you for whenever you want to reference it.

FWIW, I just finished saving each page as a PDF file to my laptop, which took maybe a little more than an hour for about 30 pages, as my laptop isn't the fasted to load internet photos. IMHO, it's definitely worth the time and "effort" with all the valuable information that it has. I still reference it fairly often for help on my knife builds.

If you're using google Chrome, all you have to do press "CTRL+P" (or print) and under the printers list, choose "Print to PDF" as your printer and hit save. Do that for each page and that's it.

Here is the link to the WIP thread for convenience:

pretty sure there is a google chrome extension that subverts Photobucket's attempts to hold every ones photos for ransom.

It's ironic, because a guy went to the trouble of documenting that thread in PDF way back when and got jumped all over for doing it, and now people are being told to do just that.

Yeah, that was BS. The people complaining didn’t own the thread itself. I couldn’t understand what the harm in making a PDF was.

Huh, I was completely unaware of that.

As I mentioned, if this thread in inappropriate, somebody let me know and I'll delete my post and edit the title.

I wasn't trying to step on anybody's shoes here, and I'm not trying to tell anybody what they should or shouldn't be doing. I just thought some would appreciate knowing that the pictures will be going down soon, just as I appreciated Lorien sharing it in C&H so that I had a chance to save it, and I figure a lot of guys here may not go to that sub-forum.

Oh well, can't please everyone.

Do you know if this works on all pages that have already had their 3rd party image hosting taken from the last time this happened? There are a number of great WIP's that this has happened to and if this extension works, I'll definitely check it out.

Nothing to do with you or your post. I say save away if you find it helpful.

There's also one for Firefox that seems to work pretty well, but saving them might be the best option. I'd guess that if its possible, Photobucket will try to shut these down or bypass them eventually. If they don't, then their ransom gig is kinda over.

Hi all, thanks for posting this reminder, I accidentally deleted all my saved links earlier in the year.

One question for those of us (probably just me): oftentimes I go back to threads I have saved and instead of seeing the pics, I get an icon saying that the images are no longer available. Is there a different way to save the thread instead of just putting the link on my "Favorites" list?

Thanks
as always

Hey Billy, if you use google Chrome, just press "CTRL+P" (or print) and change the printer to "Save as PFD" then click save. You will have to do this for each page, but I believe it's definitely worth the time. It took me maybe an hour to save all of them, but I was going a bit slow and my internet on my laptop isn't that fast so it took a bit more time to load the pages. This will save everything on the page including all of the pictures onto your computer.

Hope this helped. :)

Btw, there are also extensions or Add-ons you can install to your browser (i.e Firefox, Chrome etc.) where you can save the pages.

There is one for Firefox called "Pocket" than you can save any web pages to and it saves them to your page in the account you make with them, so it's saved online as opposed to on your computer directly and whenever you want to veiw them you just go to your account. There is an icon in the firefox tool bar that it adds when you install it so you can quickly save and access the pages you save. I downloaded it but have yet to toy with it with that much other than testing it by saving a couple pages the other day, but it seems to work alright.

Anyway, just do a search for extensions (for Chrone) or Add-ons (for firefox) that save websites and you should find a number of them. Here is a link to get "Pocket" for firefox if you are interested: https://getpocket.com/firefox/
