Another of the guys work and I do a bit of trading and selling guns and knives to each other. He's given me some really good deals along the way and I've tried to reciprocate. Even so, he usually gives me a heck of a price on things, especially knives, from a stag Case Sharkstooth, to a couple of hard to find, long out of production Cold Steel knives, such as a NIB Carbon V Bush Ranger for $50 when they are going for $100 or more if you can find them.
We also trade/sell each other some cheap knives that just appeal to us. He showed up the other night with a Traditions brand Bowie with sheath. A nice sheath that is set up for the left side, btw. This one is 440C, made in Spain. Traditions brought in some knives to go along with their muzzle loaders, also made in Spain. Even with the blade etch that has the Traditions label, Spain, and Stainless Steel (could have left that part out) etched on one side, it's actually a very nice knife with excellent grinds and a very sharp edge it came with.
Well my buddy originally got this knife from The Sportsman's Guide a few years ago for around $30. He said he'd sell it to me for $20. I waffled a little, but said, okay. After all, it did have a nice sheath, it was sharp, and I figured it was 440 something. I was quite happy to learn it was 440C. I did have the last $20 left over after I'd stopped at the gun shop a few days earlier. No sense hanging onto that little bit left over, right
This is it btw,
All should be well right? Wellll, no. I think to myself (dangerous as we know) that I can add a few pins to the grip and give it some character. Cool. Then I get thinking, wow, this would really be neat if I had a muzzle loading pistol to balance it out. Hey, I have a cheap Hawken type rifle I want to gussy up a little. My Green River knife fits the rifle better though. But, a pistol would go really nice with the Bowie. Stars align, etc., etc..
Had a little time on the way to work so into the gun shop I go. What should happen to be sitting in the display case with the usual assortment of new Pietta and Uberti blackpowder revolvers, but a used Traditions Trapper pistol in .50, same as my rifle. Double set triggers, really nice clean shape, and did I mention it was a Traditions brand? And, just about the same length as the Bowie? And, the wood is about the same color on each? And, the price was really good?
Did I end up dropping a few dollars on it to lay it away? Oh yeah. That $20 Bowie knife somehow is now costing me a little over a hundred more so it won't be alone. Ya have to be aware of those simple little deals. Sometimes they are just the crack of the door opening to pull ya right in.
I suppose I could lay out some lessons learned such as: "Never go in the gun shop in a wanton state with any money in or near you." Or ask myself, "What the heck are you ever really gonna do with that stuff?" Instead I opted to just say to self, "Darn! That was just serendipity! Both those put in your path less than a week apart and I actually had a few dollars to take advantage of the situation!"
Sounds good anyway.
Beware the little deals my friends, for they are only the bread crumbs leading into the oven. I was a little cold anyway. Pass the salt.
