My BK9 got me! I was being stupid preparing for a fire out in the woods, splitting up some cedar. I was holding it at the bottom thinking I would just push through the stick gently with relative speed, like I always do. There was a knot on top, so I had to keep pressing harder and harder. I eventually got through the knot and went all the way to my hand. =] yummy. I luckily was not to far from the house, so I walked down with my finger wrapped in my shirt. Lets just say I was lucky that the shirt was red. It bled all over the place. I wrapped it in some Wypall and ate dinner. It bled through that so I wrapped it again. I eventually admitted defeat and went down to see a relative of my friends, who was a Dr. I only had to get 4 stitches, and I was able to go to my friends Clinic for free. (Good thing too, someone brought a gun to the hospital that night) The doctor said it was the most blood she has seen come out of an appendage. =] I got stitched up real quick and was able to continue camping out later that night. It was really cold, and a little more odd with stitches, but still good with my trusty BK9. I have learned my lesson. =] -Josh

damn everyone is getting bit this month.....

I think I will put my knives away for a while, should have just put a band-aid on

woof. lots of cuts from beckers from being used...with/around the woods! makes me proud...none of that sissy, drawer-queen, wrapping an izula while on the couch crap :o for those unfamiliar, i carry a couple of these "quikclot" in my pack to prevent excessive bleeding. they also have cylinder-shaped ones where you can insert it inside gun shot and stab wounds while waiting for help.

Where do you get it?

Chicks dig battle wounds (lol)

Hope they at least gave you some good stuff for the pain :D (They never do though)

Tough spot for a cut though. Bending fingers and all. Had one like that once
opposite hand, same spot. Took forever to heal kept ripping it open. Finally had to splint it.

Hope your's goes better.

the burned hand teaches, as they say :)

That sucks bud, lucky that 9 didn't gnaw of the whole finger and leave you with just a nub! Heal quick!

After a cut that I couldnt get to stop bleeding while I was on a trip, it eventually did, but I was lightheaded and seriously woozy when I got into town, I've started carrying hemostatic gauze, benzoin and duct tape. The benzoin is to clean the area and makes tape stick really well. And I've found that duct tape will hold just about any wound closed.
I re bottle the benzoin in a mini dropper bottle from backpackinglight.com so it will fit in even the tiniest FAK and keep one in my knife kit too.

Liquid bandage and sutures have become norms for my outdoor FAKs as well.

If you would've had a lanyard attached from the end of the knife to your wrist, pulled taught, would it have prevented it?

I know that lanyards can do more than just 'look cool'. Rigging one up like that could prevent your hand from slipping forward, no?

Just looking to see if anyone else uses this when doing hard work and if so how they do. I have also heard of people putting the lanyard between their palm and knife to retain some sort of grip.......not sure.

Do a bit of reading on those hemostatic agents before you buy them. Not all of them work, and some are better than others if you really need to use them.

It is always a great idea to carry a first aid kit of some type. Just be careful of the hype given to some types of gear.

I wrote an article on this topic a few years ago for SWAT magazine. I tried to make it a common sense kind of thing.

I thing if my knife ever bites me I will take it out to the wooda and force it to cut down a tree or something. You have to show it who is in charge!!!!!:D

Ruckmaster, any chance you can give me a link to that article? Or maybe email it to me? I only have experience with quick clot and combat guaze

Stick in one hand, BK9 in the other... yep, definitely want to pay attention to how you apply one of those to the other.

As a side note - I see lots of people on BF getting bit. Aside from paying attention and using proper technique - get some gloves. A $10 pair of elkskin ropers will stop 90% of these minor cuts. Also prevents blisters, splinters, etc.

Be careful guys - no one wants to use 2 hands to order 5 beers.

Gruntinhusaybah,

Here is the link

Sorry, I am not sure if I am allowed to post links. Search for a site by ARUC Systems. The link to the article is on the home page.

I did not go into hemostatics in detail. The article is really more about what to consider putting in a first aid kit. Kind of a general article.

If you would like to read stuff about scientific research/comparisons on hemostatics then just let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Hope this helps

I should also thank everyone on this forum for all of great info. Fun to read stuff.

Yea, Its basically healed by now. This was a little while ago, I just decided to post it now. I didn't want to have to go to the Dr. for such a small cut, I was forced to. For me, a paper towel and a roll of Duct tape would have worked just fine.
