When an ax is just not enough

I like a good ax, and have several. Sometimes though, even a good ax is just not enough, and you need a chain saw. :D

I was trail riding down in the Ocala NF this weekend, and on one trail, there were 14 down trees blocking the trail. One was so large that even after cutting it in two places, I still had to use the truck to drag it off to the side.

Took me an hour to travel a mile, with all the stops. I can't imagine how long it would have taken with an just an ax.

Just one of the many that had to be cleared.

nice truck. looks like an ol' toyota? if so, good choice :D

maybe you coulda used a shackle and a snatch strap to pull some of them to the side rather then cut them up?

Oh come on. NO pics of your chainsaw??? What? Come on man! We need to see.

Big fan of chainsaws here. Don't own any myself, but have been running chainsaws for several years now and I enjoy it a lot.

;) Right, no such thing as when an axe isn't enough!!!! Little puny girly axes maybe.....

Even with a little handle- each of those tiny trees would have taken one- maybe two chops:p

I understand the need for chainsaws, but don't like them much- too heavy, loud and messy. Not much that I've come across that I couldn't handle with my Little Baby, but not what you want to clear bush all day long with.

What kind of trees were they?

The saw is an Echo ES400. I have modded it with a 16 inch Oregon bar and chain. It is one cutting machine. I always carry the saw, a can of gas and a bottle chain lube in the truck.
My old 1988 4Runner can go anywhere, and with only 180,000 miles on it, is good for another 15 years or so. :)

Chainsaws are for sissies. I want one of those massive logging vehicles with the giant motorized saws attached to the front. :D

Chainsaw? Just use your super human strength and lift it out of the way

Though I would have to say, there have been several occasions when I found a chainsaw to be quite necessary on back roads.

that brings to mind an incident several years back. I was trail riding, in much the same area, with about 6 other guys and their jeeps & trucks.
None of us had a chain saw that trip (I learned MY lesson), and sure enough, around a tight turn, with trees and gall berry bush brushing the truck doors, a LARGE pine tree was across the trail.
We stopped to debate what to do next. Turning around was not an option, so it looked like we were going to have to back up for about 1/4 mile.
I was curious, and put my hands on the tree. Hey, it moved! Further examination showed it was punky and rotten.
I told the fellows, all young guys, that the other alternative was that I'd just pick up the tree, and move it.
After listening to the cat calls and scoffing, I put my arms under it, and lifted it, and moved it off the trail.
INSTANT respect for the old dude.

I showed them it was light and rotten, and told them that on these excursions, they always needed to invite at least one old guy to do the thinking. ;)

great pics & thoughts on what you can run into. i was on old logging road & fell into a deep truck rut. luckily i carried a tractor jack in addition to a hydralic jack. after that i added a come along which turned out to be great in some deep mud.ore & washington have thousands of miles of old logging roads in the national forests & one is wise to have plenty of equipment with them.

Dennis, you are absolutely correct. I posted this here in the first place, as being able to get your vehicle out of a jam is a vital part of wilderness survival.

All of us need to inventory our vehicles. Before going off road, you need to check your fuel, oil, brake fluid..........and have more of each if needed.
Recovery kit, which would include a high lift jack, two rope, snatch block, shovel, winch or come-a-long, a good spare tire, spare belts, tools and yes, a chain saw or good ax.

I'm going to get a new chainsaw (Husqvarna) and my little 14" bladed Poulan will become part of my winter truck kit. They do come in handy after major storms!
