When buying a lightly used knife (under 1 year old) do you...prefer all patina and handling marks be removed and look as close to new as possible.

OR

Do you prefer the knife to have the light scratches from pocket carry and patina intact.

Always curious on everyone's thoughts on this one. Appreciate the comments.

I've seen more damage from attempted & botched cleaning than honest use. I prefer users to be as-is, un-touched. Just me - YMMV!

I prefer it be sent to me in whatever condition it happens to be in at the time of purchase. If I want the knife modified or cleaned I would rather do it myself.

I see any attempts to clean a knife that a person bought and used as them potentially trying to cover up any past misuse or neglect.
If it is patina, pocket worn, scratches, leave it and describe and show the use in detail in the post. If it is lint in the joint, remove that, but aside from something Very minute like that, leave it alone.

I am quite capable of cleaning up a knife myself. I usually like the sellers to leave patina and scratches intact, because it usually means I can get the knife for a much better price. Other buyers are less interested and the seller usually puts a low price on it because they are embarrassed about how it looks.

If someone polishes it back up pretty but lists it as "used, carried, sharpened" and shows the pics, I can figure out whether I want it or not on my own.

Only thing I would object to would be someone trying to pass off a used knife as new because they had cleaned it up after using it.

Some of my favorite carry knives have come from honest sellers here on the forum who sold me a knife that had been carried and sharpened and had a little patina on them, sold as-is with full disclosure. I cleaned, polished, and sharpened them up to my preferences and have what looks like brand new knives that I enjoy using.

Can't imagine to buy a (recently) used knife if its former use is unknown. I eat with such a knife and I won't eat with an unknown object. Older (much older!) knives are ok for collection. If it pleases me I get it.

As long as the knife arrives as close to advertised as possible I am usually ok with wear.

Exactly how I feel, I can polish off patina or resatin (is that a word?) a blade. Just as long as its what I agreed to pay for I don't really care.

I want the knife in original condition that the former owner left it. I want all the stains, any rust, nicks, whatever. I want to see the whole story of the knife and maybe where it's been. Everything has a story to tell, and I hate to see that erased!

Well said! I'm the same ref pre-owned knives.

lightly used is sometimes how i like to buy knives. i have a compulsion that really prevents me from using a new knife. dont want to be the first to nick it. light scratches on the blade, maybe one or two sharpenings is ok. recently just got the 2014 blade forums used, and it did look good according to the pictures. i have a history of buying a few used just so i can use them and not feel bad. i do scrutinize and ask the seller what the use history was, number of sharpenings, what kind of things they cut. of course they may lie, and i may get a lemon. but the blade forums sellers have been honest. lightly used, can mean pocket carry, and rarely used, except maybe envelope opening.

very nice, the blade forums knife i bought, is some what patinaed. ill consider getting some flitz if i can find it around, thanks for the tip!

If you are the seller, oil the joint, wipe the blade and handle down with a clean rag or paper towel. If you want apply a drop or two of oil to the blade and wipe everything down. Take your pictures and give everyone a look at the knife. Beyond that I can figure it out on my own.
