When buying a Military

Dear forumites

I have become interested in getting a serrated Military, but I am afraid that I may end up buying one of the older models that is said by some to have problems with the lock-up etc, and thus get a "lemon".

When handling the knife, what should I look for to ensure that it is the "new" version, that the lock-up is good, etc?

How should the liner act in a "good" Military?

Is it true that the new version has the black clip and the old ones with the lock-up problems have the shiny clip?

Do both old and new ones have the CPM 440V or is it only the new ones? Did the first Militaries come out in ATS 34? Were they the ones with the problems?

Forgive all my questions, but this will be the first time I am getting a liner lock knife, all my previous knives have been back locks.

Thanks in advance, from the far east.

I'll try to provide some quick answers...

The lastest generation has three clip screws, rather than two. It also has a smooth choil, unlike the older version which had dentations in that area. Those are the easiest ways to tell the difference.

When you open the knife, you want the liner to land near the center of the tang, or slightly to the left. You don't want the liner to spring all the way over to the right and only stop when it hits the opposite scale. Also, check for up and down play when the knife is locked open. If there isn't any, you've probably got a good lockup.

No. The new version originally had shiny clips, but they were changed to black late last year.

Do both old and new ones have the CPM 440V or is it only the new ones? Did the first Militaries come out in ATS 34? Were they the ones with the problems?
Both the old and new versions come in 440V and ATS-34. I think there are around 3000 of the new version models in ATS-34.

Hope that helps... Now go buy one!

Also, the newest Military's have "Military" laser engraved into the blade, while older (but with the current improvements) have "Military" physically engraved into the blade.

Thanks for your replies. Now I have the confidence to go off and get this knife.

I was thinking that it would be my main carry when I eventually get round to climbing Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah, M'sia(It's more like a walk than a climb).

I keep putting it off, family matters and financial problems get in the way....but I will do it eventually--you only live once.

Best wishes and thanks
