When did Case start using Stainless for all their back springs?

The first one I got new in the mid 70's had stainless springs, I remember I thought it was strange when in '82 I got an Uncle Henry and the springs turned dark, but the blades did not! The XX knives had carbon springs and blades.

Yep, Mr. Codger 64 himself said once that Schrade switched to stainless blades even on the OT knives about when they switched to blister packs in the end days, helped the big box retailers increase shelf life.

I think a lot of the changes Case made in product and marketing occurred mid 70's and early 80's. This was good for offering a greater number of products in a wider variety. They pretty well invented the modern version of knife collecting at that time, so they were doing something right!

The current manufacture (in last 5 years or so) CV bladed Case knives have stainless springs? I did not know that. Stupid me, I thought the springs on my Case CV canoe had high carbon springs.

The biggest problem on Canoe's with CV springs is trying to get the to float without rusting. Sorry fishhunter I couldn't help myself.

I have two Case 6318s that are dated 2013 one has stainless back springs and one doesn't and both have stainless blades.

Perhaps the question is really "has Case gone back to using carbon for their back springs?" It would be cool if this is the case!

I just wanted to update this thread.

I have a Case Peanut that is tang stamped 1979. Brown jigged delrin with carbon blades and back springs.

I have Kissing Crane stilleto (~1990) with carbon spring and stainless blade. Any other knives with that twist?

I just wish they would quit putting stainless punches on CV knives. The springs I could handle, but I dunno, something about nicely patinated blades with that dumb stainless punch, like a sore thumb, just bugs me.

Totally agree. I really like punch knives but the stainless mixed in there is a turn off.

In the modern materials topic a few posts down, someone just posted that they'd like to see a knife with a mix of stainless and carbon blades. I suppose there's no wrong or right. The stainless springs require less upkeep. I'm not sure if there is any functional benefit to carbon springs.

Near the end, some of Schrades had mismatched spring and blade steels.

I have a recent utica stockman with carbon blades and one stainless, one carbon spring. I mean, come on guys, this is just silly. I would love this knife otherwise.
