When did EK get taken over by Blackjack?

I'm curious if the 2 EK Commando knives that I have are pre-Blackjack era or from afer they were taken over. I bought them in 1989/90.

Thanks.

I won't swear to it but I believe they would be pre Blackjack. I seem to recall that Balckjack bought Ek in the early 90's.

The older Eks were usually marked Richmond, Virginia. Most of the Blackjack Eks were marked Effingham. I have unmarked Eks that I know were Effingham manufacture. If yours are from the early 80's they are most likely Richmond made. When Blackjack took over I am certain there were completed unsold knives and probably a good amount of unassembled parts. Blackjack more than likely sold both---knives that were complete when they took over and some that they assembled from parts but that were probably still marked Richmond. The one thing you can be sure of is that if the knife is marked Effingham, it is Blackjack made.

SDouglas has it right. It was in late '92 - early '93 if memory serves. SharpCdn, yours are Richmond Virgina Ek Commando Knife Company blades.

Here's a link to my Ek's:

Thanks guys, mine do in fact say richmond virginia. Guess their actual EK's.

Too bad their not around anymore, I like their style alot. Good history behind them too.

Oh but they are around!!! Ek has a half page add in the December 1999 Knifeworld saying write to receive information on the Ek Custom shop and Ek Commando Knives. Their address is:
Ek Knife Company
601 N Lombardy St Dept K11
Richmond, VA 23220

Geobar,

You're not kidding are you? I knew the old museum they ran was still operational, but every attempt to contact Ek or Vince Signorelli (the manager in the late '80s - early 90's) met with failure.

Any chance you could scan and post that ad here? I haven't seen a copy of KnifeWorld around here in years.

!!! Unbelievable!!!

Don't know if you looked at my Ek knives on the link I provided above, but the top knife in the picture is a M5 that the custom shop worked on for me.... the handle is mine that I carved from cocobolo. All the rest are production M5/M6s except the one boot knife.

Wow, amazing.

Is it really Ek though? Or has someone else just bought their name? Why are they so hard to find?

This is really cool, thanks for pointing them out!

Somebody correct me if I am wrong. The way to tell a pre Blackjack from a post is this. On the knife where the logo is, the PRE had WW2, Korea, Vietnam. The Post had Gulf War added. I think I remember hearing this many years ago, so if I am wrong, please let me know. If I am correct then I hope this info can be useful.

I requested a catalog from Ek on 12/13/99 and got it today. Very informative and nice pic's (though B&W)along with a price list.

Richard,

Ek Virginia added the Gulf War to their logo... and that was before Blackjack took over.
